Limp mode then normal etc.
Limp mode then normal etc.
Hi guys,
For a few months now I have had various limp mode situations and am at a loss to know why.
To date I have done the following:
New APPS (Timbo)
New transmission governor solenoid and sensor.
Removed and cleaned MPA and IAT sensors - IAT gave reading of 17.46 K ohms at 50 F. I have an auto and no exhaust brake, so the sensors were not very dirty but I cleaned them anyway.
Checked ECT sensor and it gave 27.6 k ohms at 50 F !!!!!
Installed new replacement Raptor fuel pump - now get 19 idle, 15 cruising at 60 mph and 12 when WOT.
I don't think the VP44 is failing yet as the truck starts with no problems, does not smoke when driven (to my knowledge) - exhaust looks clear in rear view mirror. When the truck is driven it drives just fine and when I get the lip mode it is intermittent and usually returns back to normal. Even when in limp mode I have not seen any sign of smoke in the exhaust.
Of course I am hoping the VP is still good and that my problems are being caused by something else - bad plug connections, grounds, spurious electrical signal etc.
Any and all thoughts would be appreciated. This is starting to become a reliability problem and I am loathe to spend $2,500 on a VP44 and still have the same problems afterwards. The only codes I have had are P0216 and
P0222. P0222 cleared and never came back and I don't get any CEL showing.
I understand the P0216 can be caused by several different faults - any one have a check list for these ?
Thanks in advance.

Mariner,
I am not going to be much help in suggesting the cure to your problems but I can help with on thing. A VP44 is an expensive part to replace on the off chance that it might be your problem. The link below will take you to a page (Bluechip Diesel) with some really good VP44 diagnostic procedures and questions. This should help you narrow down whether your injection pump is your problem.

Thanks for the link to the Blue Chip diagnostic for VP44 pumps.
I am wondering about the waste gate on the turbo ! If this started sticking the signal to the inlet manifold would be compromised and this could in turn give odd ball readings at the MAP sensor.
I guess I should look at the truck and see where the waste gate is situated and if it can be removed for maintenance/cleaning etc. If the waste gate is sticking it could cause some of the problems I am getting - especially the "fleeting" limp mode situation.
Has anyone dealt with the sticking wastegate before and if you did, did it solve your/any problems ???
Again, any info from others that have had similar situations would be greatly appreciated.
