Lift Pump Removal

Is it absolutely required to remove the fuel
filter housing to change out the lift pump, or can
I reach everything from below.

Done mine four times from the top before I installed my pusher pump.

I reach my right arm around through the space between the fender wall, fire wall, and brake booster. I can then reach through the space between the brake booster and fuel filter with my left arm, works pretty well. About an hour to an hour and a half the first time, 45 minutes there after. There is a quick disconnect on the fuel line before the lift pump, makes for reinstalling the banjo bolts alot easier, just don't tighten the banjo bolts until everything is reinstall and connected.

why not remove it? It is just two bolts, and push it out of the way. Just wondering.

Thanks, Jason

You will have to remove more fuel lines and banjo bolts consuming precious time.

The fourth and final lift pump I changed out, I had it down to 35 minutes including filter housing removal. Notice I said the final changeout?

Remove the 2 10mm bolts ONLY and push it away from the head so you can see and reach the lp. Makes it real easy to change... Phil

Good too if you need to access the ECM on the side of the block. I used a bungee cord to hold it away from the motor.
fwiw, the bolt holding the 50 pin connector to the ECM is a 4mm hex.

Changed mine out last week from the top without moving the filter, but if I ever change it again I will move the filter housing. Real tight when you got big hands and what ever you do don't drop a banjo washer.

Just relocate it to the pusher pump position and kill two birds with one stone. Send me a PM if you want details.

So when you replace the lift pump, does the fuel system lose prime or will it start right up?

Has anybody removed the starter and approached from the bottom. Sounds like to much work to me, but was wondering. I stumble with the banjo washers when I changed mine last time. I have two short fingers on my right hand from an accident at work. This makes it a little tougher for me. My Hayes book says to remove the starter. I did not look in my Dodge manual.
