Lift Pump Puzzle....

Switched to P4601HP, moved it to frame rail near tank. Used big banjo on filter inlet. Should have seen 18 psi, no? Fired it up and got 10 psi. 10 psi idle and 9 psi WOT. I am puzzled?! Used to see 15 idle and 9 WOT. ??????
Double checked with another gauge, same result. Looks like I'm getting a well regulated but low pressure flow.
Label on pump sez it should be used with Part #XXXXXXX regulator....
I can see a regulator to lower pressure if it's too high. But ***? Parts store has another pump coming tomorrow. Guess I'll try that and see what's up.
Any ideas?

i put the bully dog big fuel kit on my truck and used to see 24 lbs of pressure at idle and about 20 at wot. then it just dropped to 10 psi at idle. my stock lift pump crapped out and i just bypassed it. now all i carry is 12 psi at idle and 9-10 psi at wot.

You might check the voltage to the pump. The lift pump gets it's power from the engine computer (ECM) and some folks have reported low voltages which slows down the pump...mine shows 11.7 to 11.9 volts on the starter bump and I'm satisfied with the pressure...15psi idle/11 psi WOT w/ no regulator on my 4601HP by itself.
In the event of low voltage, a relay with the ECM/pump wiring providing the signal and a straight wire w/fuse from the battery going to the "work" connections of the relay.

Don't bother with 4601hp they don't last went through 4 pumps in a year doing the same as you did. Just use org. replacment should get a year or so out of it My last pump lasted 11 months 2 weeks still got a new one on warrenty. Any cost out of pocket now will go towards fass pump

As per last post, the 4601hp's are junk. Don't waste your money on it.

nitrousn, 9 psi at wot isnt "really good" It's more like "ok, but-could-be-better" its border line to low

anyways, im running a holley blue, pushing somewhere in the neighbor hood of 26-28 at idle and never under 15 at WOT. And their cheap and easy to install

Thought of that right away and drove the pump directly from a 30 amp, 13.8v supply and saw a very slight improvement, maybe 1~2 psi. I did pick up the parts to put a relay in line too thinking that would help...

Dang! I was hoping to see some better life out of the LP by moving it and I've been through 5 "stock" pumps in 85K miles. I'm not impressed with them! Hopefully I'm not straying down the same old path with these....

Blackdiesel having all that fuel pressure is fine. Her is my take most factory lift pumps will pass the volume test at 4 to 5 psi wot. All the extra pressure does nothing for performance or longivity of the vp44. I see so many people on the quest for unneeded fuel pressure and waste tons of money and toss perfectly good pumps in the trash trying to do so. Ask j-body and he will confirm what i am saying. If i need a new pump i would go with the walboro and the big line kit. To me thats the best bang for the buck. I have a vulcan big line kit and a cummins recall pump on the shelf waiting for my oem pump to die. When i drop to 4 psi or less on wot i most likely will go with the walboro kit and sell my other items off. I closing all i will say is verify the volume before you condem a pump.

There is an ad in the classifieds for a factory lift pump. I bought his second one so I have a spare. I have gone through 3 or 4 lift pump in 140,000 miles.

Carter p74213 is a direct replacement for our trucks, banjo's and all work right out of the box.

Have 2 years on mine now and still idles at 17 and 12 WOT. All the guys I know around here all run them and they have similar results. I'm not saying it the end all but it's the best I have found for OEM type replacement pumps.

The FASS pumps and all similar types are great but when your in the middle of nowhere and need a pump, the Carter isn't the greatrst but it's available most anywhere in a pinch.

my latest Carter is 2 yrs old, and idles @ 14, WOT 12-13.
In the winter (20 below) it will sometimes be 1-2, then I have to heat it with the torch. Once it warms up, it goes to 12-13.
