Lift pump failure or ???

'01 Dodge CTD, 65k miles. Edge EZ, exhaust and intake are the only mods done. Yesterday the check engine light came on and a noticeable drop in acceleration once that happened. Today I had to make a run to the store and on the way the truck cut out but restarted right away. During all of this the tach has stopped working also.

Does this sound like a lift and/or injector pump issue?

TIA

Have you checked for codes?

You can try cycling the key on/off 3 times (without starting the truck), ending in the "on" position. Then watch the odometer window and codes may be displayed there. Sometimes you have to scan with a OBDII reader for them to show up.

On a second gen 24V, In most cases, you will look at fuel pressure before anything else. You can go ahead and test the fuel pressure (of course, this will tell you for sure if your LP is dead). It could be that the LP has died and the VP-44 is drawing the fuel.

Sounds like CPS to me also. Mine went out this summer. Check your codes it should tell the problem.

Yep, the CPS will do it. There are three indications of a bad CPS, the most obvious is no tach, plus no A/C, and the alternator output will cease. The voltage on the voltmeter will drop to 12 volts. Also affects power of the engine, as the ECM uses the CPS for timing reference for fuel injection timing control.

The ECM uses the CPS out put to see if the engine is running. If no output from the CPS the ECM sees it and thinks the engine isn't running, So it will de-clutch the A/C compressor (interior fan will still run) and also kill the output of the alternator (its output is computer controlled).

I picked up the sensor Mopar 1-05015488AB.

edit: Found through search that it will be located under the IP

This what I was looking for? (want to make sure this is a camshaft and not crankshaft sensor)

Thanks.

I am acutally in the process of changing mine as well. Yes, our 01s did away with the Crankshaft sensor (CKP) and use the Camshaft sensor (CMP) in its place.
Did you pull the code through the OBDII? The 1693 is a companion code that tells you you have to pull the "real" code through the OBDII port. Autozone will do it for free. I'm betting you'll get a 0341 code - that's the CMP code.

Hope that helps.

Sam

According to the pics from the link below I was sold a CKP instead of the CMP. Back to the dealer tomorrow. I only pulled the code from the odometer but will double check with an OBDII scan.

I had the dealer change my CMP. I am told it requires pulling the Injection pump to get to, and that was more work that I am up for in 15* weather.

I searched and it looks like it can be done with small hands, a few extensions and a wobbler attachment. I will see how it goes.

Picked up the correct sensor from Cummins Northwest(Portland, OR). Dodge dealer quoted $75, Cummins NW was $36.70.

Great people to deal with and told me to give him a call WHEN my lift pump goes out.
