Question Dana 80

Hello People,

I was checking out the rear end on my truck to see if I could find out what it was. I believe it is a DANA 80. The odd thing about it is that there is an electrical connection coming out of the top of it with wires going up to the engine. I haven’t a clue as to what this is. There is no switch in the cab and no message light in the dash console that I know of. I checked other threads, but can’t find anything on it.
Anybody know what this connection is for? Mostly I am just curious about it. Thanks.

My Best, Greg

Speed Sensor. It gets speedo info from the rear end after the gears. This is really good if you change gears because the reading is not effected by them. Only tires can change the speedo cal.

BTW, I am assuming it is 02 like your name. Fill out your signature when you get a chance. That will make for less questions when you pose an issue.

Smile Thanks newriverSpecon

Hey there, thanks for the reply. I was surprised to hear what it was. Thanks for the info and yes, I own a 2002. I want to post some pics of it, but in the meantime, I will try to get the missing info up to date.

My Best, Greg

if it's a dually, it's a dana80. if it's a 6speed H.O. it's a dana80. if it's a 5speed or auto then it's a dana70.

The 5-speeds are Dana 80's as well. Only 3/4 ton auto's got the 70.

Though, there are rumors that the 80 was available as a special order with the 2500 automatics.

I've never seen one, but there are guys on TDR that have one.

I think if 2500's were built with the "Camper" package/option (not tow pkg.) the auto's got the Dana 80 too.

ive also heard that rumor that dana 80's were some sort of option with an auto. but back in the day, my friend ordered his truck with the camper package and trailer package with an auto tranny. he said it would have a dana 80 rear too. when he got the truck home i took a look under it, and it had a dana 70 . oh well
