leaking timing cover

Hey all.
My timing cover has been leaking for a while but just recently got much worse. I'm checking my oil often but man it's annoying not being to park on any driveways. It'll leave a good 5 to 10 drops after sitting for just an an hour. And I hate it running all over my steering bars and what not.

Anyway, just wondering if there is any problem that leak could cause BESIDES making a mess and being a hassle to fix.

Unless it is the case bolts backing out and eventually hitting the gears, I don't see much.

Mine had been doing that for some time too. Kind of putting it off for now. 15 dollar gasket takes a day and a half to replace. Who thinks of this crap. I posted a while back and had some responses to just put some Right Stuff on it. There is no pressure or vacuum, so some goop might be the trick, as much as I hate to do things that way. I just want the drip to stop, but not to have to half disassemble my truck.

Yes exactly! Such a pain in the butt thing to have to replace. I've been putting it off too. Thinking that I'll wait till spring and use it as an excuse to put in a streets cam and a built front bumper.

Gotta make some fun out of such a big project right!

it might be the crank seal leaking, if so buy the redi-sleeved seal kit from cummins.

You might make sure it is the case to block leaking, I just went through this on mine, thought I hadn't got my case sealed up tight, and it turned out the Vacuum pump had started to leak......

You might clean it good and lay under there while someone revs it up and see if you can find the leak.

Obviously someone you trust.........

Hey that's a good idea! I know my water pump is leaking a little, picking up dirt and oil on the way down, but the majority of it is oil. I'll clean everything up and see what I can find. Thanks guys!

I must live in the wrong neighborhood! 5-10 drops in the driveway? Do we know what asphalt is made out of?

Just busting on ya!

My vacuum pump is leaking, it will make an oily mess everywhere. As the others have said, spray it down real good with brake clean or engine degreaser so you can watch it and get an idea on where it starts. You can lay under it and check but if you don't seen anything just check it daily. Another option is an engine oil dye and a uv light. Pour some dye in your engine oil and check it a lot!

dye is a good idea too! A buddy of mine at a local shop told me about Lucas engine oil stop leak. Something like it softens gasket to make them seal better. Gonna be picking up some of that shortly as well as replacing the water pump.
And of course keep checking oil.
Figure I've lost about half a quart over the last month. Not too bad, like I said just annoying.
