KDP in 24 valve Eng.

Re: KDP in 24 valve Eng.
Since I have the 53 block and 36000 miles on my 99 I will wait until 2 months or 1000 miles before the engine warranty is up.
If the KDP is actually happening (although Cummins denies it and say's that all 24 valve engines have the stepped hole) maybe I will get lucky and get a new engine

With the mileage I got on mine I'm not going to mess with it or worry about it.
The gear cover was just opened up about 2 months ago when the rebuilt VP44 was put in at cummins.

I didn't even know about this dowel pin thing on 24V at that time.

Re: KDP in 24 valve Eng.
I have been thinking about checking out the KDP. My engine build date is 2-5-98. Does anybody have a 98 24V with a later date?

What I am thinking is getting some solid evidence. I have read all the threads over yonder( thanks Pappyman) and it seems that there is some evidence for early 24V KDP problems but what can you believe.

This I believe:
I showed this info to my neighbor a mechanic. A light goes off in his brain, I remember a 24V Cummins that had a cracked case and nobody could figure out why. He could not recall the year.
I think I am going to pull the cover and see myself.

What do y'all think????

Copenhagenjunkie
It would be worth your time (2-3 hours) and peace of mind to pull your cover and tab your dowel pin since you have a early build date...the cost is 1) Front oil seal 2) gasket and sealer 3) make a tab 4) 12 pack of beer

I dont advise every 24v owner do this repair but if you have a early build date then its advisable to fix the KDP with the blocking tab or the Jig Kit repair...and as long as your into the gear housing remember to retorque the gear housing bolts
Copenhagenjunkie

Jig Kit repair
I would do the Jig Kit repair, I understand it is quick and easy. Get on the list or find out where they are having a TDR jig repair party in your area and get it done. When illflem brought this up on the TDR. I emailed Cummins and got the report back that stated that the KDP could not come out on a 24 valve That statement from Cummins is as we all know not true. But I don't believe that the old style covers went on that many 24 valve trucks. Another member that works at the Cummins motor factory assured me that they don't mix inventory and that parts supplies are only maintained for days so old and new parts are not mixed together. If I had a 98 (24 valve) or a 99 I would wait until the jig was in my town and do the easy fix. I would not be concerned until I was close to running out of warranty. But I would get it fixed, just not a high priority. If I had a 2000 or later truck I would not worry about the KDP. JMHO
