Jumping in and out of lock up
Jumping in and out of lock up
Hi my name is Chris and I own a 99 Dodge 2500 exc cab 24 valve with 4" exhaust ,Edge EZ, 90hp injectors, AFE air intake, BD Tranny with presure loc and deep pan, FASS fuel system.
I'm new to this Forum and there looks to be allot of good info. So here's my problem. The tranny is only about 5 months old and has worked great, but recently started jumping in and out of lock up when your cruising or under hard throttle, it happens in under drive and over drive. I took it back to BD and they said it was the computer picking up bad frequency from the alternator, so they put a small capacitor on the lock up wire and they said it should be fixed. Well it still doing it and it driving me nuts!
Anyone around here had these type of problems or have any ideas?

Hi chris: This is a very common problem, lots of writeups to search. Usually it is caused by electrical noise spikes. Try cleaning the battery terminals ( bad batteries can also be the cause- if yours are original replace them) and also remove and clean ground wire connections under the passenger side battery and the PCM ground wire on the firewall behind the air filter. You can also order a noise filter from DTT for about $40 that is a good fix.

Good luck, Tom

The capacitor should have fixed it if it were simply the frequency interference from the ECM (which for some lame reason is also the voltage regulator on a Dodge).
Check your wiring harness and be sure all the connections to the transmission are clean and coated with dielectric grease. Any corrosion will create a problem. Also, check the connector for the Edge, it is gets wet or corroded it will create signal problems for the PCM and cause converter troubles. Sometimes just running without the plug in module will correct the problem, then you know were it is.
If that does not work I would adjust the throttle control valve cable, get it properly centered, and be sure one of those two bit ends has not cracked and is letting the linkage flop around a bit. The next thing is to clean the Throttle Position Sensor. Look around here for an article on doing that, it is fairly simple.
If you have not had the bands adjusted and been heavy on the throttle, get that done. In cooler weather the fluid level drops just enough to confuse the transmission and it is critical to keep the bands right on the money or you get all sorts of shifting problems.
Grounding is critical on these rigs. Check all your ground wires from the batteries, the engine to frame, and engine to body. Also check the wires underneath the power distribution center and be sure none are a bit elastic.
If these do not find the problem, then you need to check the solenoid wire for the torque converter lock up valve.

Thanks guy's for all the reply's, I will check those things tonight and see what I come up with. I've already tested the batterys and cleaned the terminals. I'll disconnect the edge box and start looking at the grounds, I was going to hook up a test light to the lock up wire and take it for a drive to see if the power is fluctuating on and off. I'll deal with all the grounds and connections first and then check the TPS and cable
I'll keep you posted on what i find.
Do you really think the tranny bands would need to be adjusted already with it only being 5 months old?
Thanks
Chris.

Well i checked all the grounds and connectors and took it for a ride, and it was still doing it, so I disconnected the Edge box and the truck drives fine now.
So I'll be taking the EZ back and upgrading to the adjustable box. Does anyone have any complaints about the adjustable box?

I don't think the edge box has anything to do with it. You just moved enough stuff around to cure it for a while.
Also, you'll need to replace the brushes in the alternator. If it is original they are due.http://www.fostertruck.com/alternators.htm

Changing your box to the comp (although fun) is not going to fix your problem. Get the noise filter or start cleaning your ground connections
