Intresting Problem
Long story made short. PE4200 died, rebuilt pump put on, now has hard start problem when truck sits for several hours. Thought this was all, until yesterday this happen.
Started the truck and it sounded like it wasn't firing on 5 instead of all 6, sounded and smoked white like a a stuck injector. Killed it and started it again and it was fine. Drove home and started it again to go get some dinner for the family and it did this again. So I pop the hood, and it seems like I hear the sound of a rod knocking.
Anyone ever had a stuck injector on the 24v, or a dropped valve?
Thanks,
Mark

I had a similar episode with the hard starting most of the winter. But I don't have any abnormal sounds afterward.
I know there was a TSB on sticking valves due to TOO LOW an EGT! This happens in cases of start-stop where the engine does a lot of cold idling.

you can crack ea inj. while running to see if there is a diff in sound...when you find one that makes no diff in sound you found the cyl that is not firing.....

Since he's talking about the PE pump, I'm gonna guess 24v. Sounds like your injection pump might be on it's way out. Do you have any codes? You might want to get those scanned at the local Autozone or similar store.

Sounds like a fuel knock , if you can get a heat gun , check the exhaust manifold and find one cyl. is hotter then the others , go and then crack the injector line and see if there is a change , sometime it will still knock if some fuel still getting thru , but there should be a difference in sound .

Thanks for the help guys. I think my first step will be to pop the valve cover, and give the rocker arms a check, then I'll go from there to check the injectors lines to make sure each is getting fuel, and listen for the noise.
I do'nt do a lot of cold idling so I don't think that could be the problem but you never know.
The truck is a 2001, with 78,000 or so miles. It has been a great truck up till now. Just have to keep trouble shooting till I find it I guess.
It drove perfect today, I just am being easy on it though.
Does the hard start problem sound like the PE pump again maybe? It NEVER did it till I put the new PE pump on, and it idles at 20-21 psi, but once in gear without moving it drops to 16 psi.
