Idle speed issue

I've noticed recently that after driving at highway speeds with the cruise control engaged for a while, when I exit and come to a stop, the engine sometimes idles at approx 1000 rpm instead of the normal 850.

Here is what I have observed to be normal: lets say you are approaching a stop and you shift to neutral and coast to a stop. Until you get below about 10 mph, the engine does idle at about 1000 rpm and then as you slow below about 10 mph, it drops to a "low idle" of about 850 rpm. This truck has operated this way ever since I've had it and I assume that is the normal condition.

However, now it sometimes stays at the 1000 rpm idle even after coming to a complete stop. It really only does it after highway driving with the cruise control on though.

Has anyone else experienced this? There are no codes or any other problems whatsoever with this truck. So far it hasn't been a problem, but since there is a change from what it has been doing, I'd rather start troubleshooting this now just in case it is an indication that something is about to fail.

Ive been having the exact same problem from time to time over the last year or so. I replaced the VP when it bad and it wasnt it so I bet your happy to hear that haha. But the problem has gotten worse latley, bad enough to throw a code. If i remember right it was 0121 or someting like that. Its the code for throttle position sensor. I always figured that was the problem but never new. Also, with mine, after I came off an exit and it was high idling, it would soon after completely drop to normal idle and I would have complete dead pedal until I shut the truck off and let it sit for a few minutes. I ordered another TPS and will be putting it on very soon and I frequently travel to and from college so I will now if it fixed the problem pretty quick.

APPS probably is a good bet. I've been searching here and it seems like others with a bad APPS have had similar symptoms. The only other thing that makes sense would be if there is a sensor that tells the ECM the vehicle's speed and that sensor was failing.

APPS is the correct guess. I had the same issues with my truck not idling properly. I let this go for several years until I started having the dead peddle problem.
Don't go to Dodge for that part. They like it far more then it is worth. Do a search for Timbo's APPS. There are many satisfied customers of his APPS.

That's a normal PCM/ECM idle based on numerous internal factors. The PCM/ECM decide to idle at the normal 750 or a "cruise idle" of about 950. This is normal and happens occasionally. It should not do it every single time you stop your truck, but based on the first post conditions it appears totally normal....

I had the same issue but mine would only show up when the outside temps were below 70. I don't know why the temp made a difference, but it did. Anyway, after replacing my APPS from Timbo1, the problem went away.

I also experienced this recently, long highway drive with the cruise set, got off the highway and it would not idle down. Turned it off and started it back up and it has not done it since. Maybe its time to keep an APPS on hand About how much price difference between the after market APPS and a factory one ?

Get the APPS from Timbo1. To find his contact info, do a search on "timbo" and "APPS". When I bought mine from him, it was $150 to the door. Not sure if he went up on price. Factory is somewhere around double Timbo's price.

APPS code 0121 & A/C

I have the dead pedal issue with code 0121 on my 2001 6speed too. I just had my A/C compressor replaced two months ago, and now that it is warm out I noticed yesterday when the pedal went dead the A/C compressor also shut off. Pedal came back as usual but the A/C remained warm. Turning off the truck and then re-starting it brought the A/C back on.

Anyone else have A/C issues related to either an APPS or the VP pump? Would the ECU computer shut the A/C down during a dead pedal? This is a new one for me.
