How to take apart the transfer case

Its a 241 dhd and I want to replace the tailshaft housing gasket. Ya know, the 50 dollar metal one I also have the snap ring because i've heard it's easy to damage the old one taking it out. My question is, because I haven't looked at it yet, how do you take the tailshaft housing off? I've had the driveshaft on the ground and the 5 or six bolts out but it's was just stuck there. What's the trick?

Thanks

I've never torn apart a 241D HD, but now of the newer NP cases like the 231, 242, 249, etc that I've worked on had gaskets. All just use RTV between the parts.

Yeah the main case is rtv but the tailshaft housing is not. There is a 50 something dollar metal gasket there. I tried the rtv on it just seperating it part of the way and it didn't work.

After you take out all the bolts for the tailshaft housing, there is a rubber plug on top, remove that and there is a snap ring under it, really difficult to get to with the t-case in place, I finally ended up taking my t-case out. I just took the old metal gasket, cleaned it, then put a good coat of rtv on both sides then reasembled, never had a leak.
