How to Rebuild a Turbo???
How to Rebuild a Turbo???
What is involved with a turbo rebuild????
Is this something you can do on your bench at home.
Sorry I've never tore into one and I'm curious. Are there rebuild kits available?? Anyone know the approximate cost of doing this??
Thanks.

You can download a rebuild manual here
http://www.holset.co.uk/files/4_4_1-...%20manuals.php
same website will direct you to a shop that sells rebuild kits, they're about $70.
Most pros feel the turbo should be balanced after rebuilding, unless you have very expensive instrument you're better off shipping it out.

The HX-35 is a snap to rebuild. Heck if I did it then anyone can! hehe The kit is about $85 and it's available from High Tech Turbo in Salt Lake City. You can download factory manuals and torque specs from Holset.com. There are a few tricks to the job tho. If the center section is severely coked you may have to replace it. Closely inspect the housings for cracks, follow manual for replacements or reuse. The bearings are held in the center section with small snap rings, the snap rings have a chamfer on one side only. You must install the chamfer according to the manual!!!!! The chamfer is hard to see, I had to get a magnifying glass to see it. The kits are made to cover several models so some extra parts are included. Keep notes on EXACTLY how your turbo it built. In my case I tried to use an o ring in the kit to seal the intake housing to the center section because I couldn't remember if it was there or not so I figured more is better right? Wrong! I left my brothers in San Beradino and headed up El Cajon pass at 85 mph. Man she was running sweet! About a mile from the top I heard POP zinnnnnnnng! Bad times man! I was on the side of I-15 with the intake housing hanging on by the wastegate actuator. The compressor wheel was totally scarfed up. I put on two pairs of leather gloves and proceded to work on a hot turbo, not fun. I managed to get it together enough to run to Victorville and checked it out again at a roadside gas station. Long story short I had to buy a $60 compressor wheel, a turbo mounting gasket, and a new tail housing gasket.
You will need to get a turbo mounting gasket as they are only good for one use. They are about four dollars at the dealer. You will also want to spray PB Blaster or penetrating oil on all the bolts and nuts and let them sit for about 20 minutes before starting disasembly. Harbor Freight has a big honking set of snap ring pliers that may work well for the ring that holds the intake housing on. I did it the hard way with channel locks, not fun. You may also want to have a place in mind and ready incase you want to have your center section media blasted to remove coking. I got lucky as mine had no coking in it. You will need a torque wrench that will go to 250 inch pounds and a crows foot wrench for some of the center section nuts. Have a scratch awl or a scribe handy to make index marks on the housings and the compressor wheel. Pay special attention to indexing the compressor wheel to the turbine shaft. They are balaced as a unit and you must maintian correct orientation. Mark all the housings with index marks so you know exactly how they go together.
FOR GODS SAKE READ THE MANUAL BEFORE YOU DO THIS JOB! YOU WILL BE SORRY IF YOU DON'T. TAKE YOUR TIME AND DON'T HURRY OR BE CHEAP ON TOOLS OR MATERIALS. AGAIN YOU WILL BE SORRY. THIS IS NOT THE KIND OF JOB YOU DO OVER A TWELVE PACK. YOU MUST PAY ATTENTION TO SMALL DETAILS.
The guys at High Tech Turbo were very helpful. They answered all of my questions via email or phone and they had all of the parts in stock. They are good to do business with IMHO. The whole job took my brother and I about 5 hours with lots of stopping to tell lies and look at girly posters. hehe Don't let it intimidate you it's not hard, but you must come to class prepared.
