Help! new to diessel engines

Hello,
I am new to this site. My truck, a 2002 3500 cummins 5.7 liter turbo is running bad. I can only obtain 30 mph. The codes in my truck are 1693 and 0216. Can anyone help me? I have already change the throttle position sensor due to the advise of a so called online Dodge mechanic expert. I am hoping that truck owners know what I need to do....

You have posted in the first gen section for 89-93 dodge trucks. You question would be better answered in the proper forum. You can also google search the code and find some good info that way.

Posting in the correct forum would be a good start, we don't know anything about your over-valved electronic engine in this forum.

this is the 1st gen section 1989-1993. you might want to post in the 2nd gen section where people are more farmiliar with your truck. good luck!

I would probably start by selling it and getting one about 10 years older.

What you have is called dead pedal. Sometimes it is the APPS, which you have already changed.

The next step is much more radical, the Injection Pump has likely gone to its special resting place in the sky.

P1693 is a companion code, it means you have a code stored in the ECM, P0216 is the timing circuit code if I remember correctly, it is a biggie.........

I would FIRST though, make sure you have 7 PSI or so fuel pressure, I had one with the 216 code straighten out after I got a working lift pump, 2 years later it is still good.

Good luck with that. Mine had the same code under warranty thank goodness. First they checked flow/pressure on my block mounted lift pump, replaced it with the intank turd. Picked truck up went to work on a thursday morning with it, came back in the truck on friday afternoon where it went dead pedal again and set the same code. One new vp44 later and it was fine. 40,000 miles later and another new fuel pump and all is well....so far.

My truck had a gauge on it within a few weeks of when I got it, never had a programmer under warranty, NEVER went below 6-7psi on my gauge. Vp44 fixed the problem, but as Pat said, you still need to know fuel pressure, make sure your lift pump has not tanked on you.

While fuel pressure is key on these VP44 trucks, they will run on weak pressure. You are gonna need a new injection pump end of story. Sorry for the bad news, but that is the weak link in the fuel delivery section. Make sure you get at a very minimum the fuel pressure gauge. I would then upgrade the lift pump.

Dont mind the 12v buttheads. So you mis-posted. Not like anyone else hasn't.

As noted, your codes are not good. Sounds like you need a VP44 (injection pump) and possibly also a new fuel pump. If you care to know about your truck then there is loads of information on this and other Cummins forums but dont hesitate to ask questions. Thats how we all learned even though some will act like they've always known and have rude comments.
The (5.9) Cummins with a VP44 (1998-2002) needs proper fuel pressure and the stock fuel system is notorious for crapping out, causing the VP to fail. So to keep this simple, you can look for a quality diesel repair shop who can help you with this fix or if you're mechanically able then you can do it yourself. There are vendors on these websites who offer VP's alone or VP/fuel pump combo's for a great price. I highly suggest you get both. And for that matter, it would be a benefit to install three critical gauges. Fuel pressure, pyrometer (EGT's), boost, and tranny temp if you have an auto. Those will help keep you in the "safe" zone and potentially out of harms way.

Again, feel free to ask questions before the work is started, especially if you're not sure if the shop is being fair or is knowledgeable. Just because its a diesel shop or that they claim they work on diesels doesn't mean at all that they know what they're doing with a 2nd gen Cummins. So its not uncommon for guys to share their experiences of overpriced improper repairs.
