Help! MAP sensor removal/installation problem!

I ordered an OEM MAP sensor from Geno's and today I finally was getting down to installing it. I found online that I needed a 1 1/16" deep well socket and 2" extender, 1/2" socket wrench. We had to take a 60 min. RT drive to get these tools. To my horror, the socket wouldn't fit over the sensor in the truck! The one from Geno's easily fit in the socket, so I got out my flashlight and took a closer look, and the shaft on the sensor in the truck is much longer than the one from Geno's! So, did I get the wrong sensor? Why is the one in my truck so much longer? Where can I get a socket deep enough to remove this sucker?!

if I remember right I got my socket from craftsman and its about 3" in length maybe little longer. I dont have to use a extension. make sure you do not over tighten.. stop when it snugs up.. the sensor breaks really easy. ( i found out this 2x.).. over the years.. are you sure you need a new map.. are you having codes thrown.. could always use some elec, cleaner and clean off the sensor head..

I have P0237 and no power. I had the CEL for a long time without symptoms, then it was slow to pick up in first gear, and then one day there was no power across the boards (it would eventually come up to speed but no torque). I wasn't believing the CEL because I didn't have "dead pedal," until I had "dead pedal"!

So, the MAP is the first thing I'm going after. Meanwhile, it appears that the sensor that is in there is an old one that was discontinued - it is longer and a regular deep well socket won't fit over it. I guess I need an extra deep well socket. Anyone know if these old sensors are also 1 1/16"?

hey i had the same problem with my truck i replaced the map sensor and the new one is smaller then the old one i don't remember what size the old one was but i do remember that the socket i had wasn't deep enough. what i did was took a pair of plyers and broke the plug off the old sensor cause its junk anyway then the socket fit right over no problem. my truck did the same thing too i thought it was the injection pump at first so i replaced it and the truck still had no power couldn't get up past 30 mph. then i found the map sensor code so i replaced that and the truck ran fine. i had dead pedal and the injection pump death code anyway so replacing the pump wasn't a total loss.

Thanks, bigsmokey - I had the thought to do that, too, but got squeamish about it, so ordered an extra deep socket that I just tried right now. Guess what? It still didn't fit! It was a big thick chunk of metal and I think the whole thing is too big around to fit in the space. So, I'm going to try breaking off the plug as you did and use the first socket I got. I hope that does the trick!

Okay, that didn't work! The 1 1/16" sockets don't fit on this part! There's a cylindrical part that the those sockets won't fit over, so what size socket does the original discontinued part require?!! The new part does fit the 1 1/16" socket. I don't have the right size so will have to buy it and am hoping someone can tell me what size I need to buy.

Thanks!

You may try a crow foot if you can get in there with it.
