HELP... Fuel heater gone wronge
Well My fuel filter canister sprung a leak. I located it to the fuel heater seal has given out. So i just thought i would go to the dealer and get a new one. Thinking that at worst i would be out 2-3 hundred. Well i got a quote and it is $1,100.
What the heck? My best guess is that it is made of pure gold or something.
So i'm looking for some alternatives.
1. Scoure the earth for a used one in a salvage yard and pray they don't know how much its worth.
2. Try to find someone that has put a FASS system on a 99 and they will be kind enough to let me buy it from them.
3. JB weld the seal to the canister and pray that it will work.
Any sugestions will be apreciated.

4. Get an Airdog or the like that does away with the stock filter.
5. Go to cummins and get a quote.
6. Go to the next truck shop and look what they have.

Why not just tighten the torx screw FASTENERS holding the connector to the case?

Thanks - that's what I get for depending on other's descriptions of what they got - guess mine isn't a '99, then - has a plasic screw-off top, accessories are attached on either side, fuel inlet rear side at fuel heater level, fuel exit bottom center, lift pump mounting bosses below fuel inlet - parts manual shows pretty much same drawing for many model years.

If it is leaking where the two fat wires go through the top, that's exactly what mine was doing shortly after I got it. (Also a '99). The problem in my case was the O-RING that is intended to seal the connector. I disconnected everything and took it apart. Once you pull the torx screws from the heater element, the fitting can be pushed out of the hole from the top. If you can get the original O-RING off in reasonable shape, any bearing supply place should be able to match it. The hardest part of the whole job was getting the wires out of the electrical connector so I could get the new O-RING down to the fitting. It took me a total of a couple hours, a couple new crush washers, and one O-Ring.

Yes, J.R. - that's the one I wanted and got for upgrading my '96 - mine has three bosses below the fuel inlet for attaching a lift pump - I was told it's a '99 model

grider pilot,
It sounds like the same type of problem but mine is alittle different. It looked like the plastic housing was actualy chipped off. So the o-ring wasn't able to do it's job.

I just re-sealed mine with a new o-ring. The guy at the Cummins shop said to use a green #8 or #10 air conditioning oring. I gave it a shot and it worked great. It's too bad the plastic on your heater is messed up. A user with the name Mcmopar has a filter assembly available if you don't want to get too crazy with upgrades.
