Hard Starting ~
Hard Starting ~
My '99 R3500 (160k) started to hard start awhile back; i.e., instead of it's usual turn the key and light, it would take progressively longer to start. Also, it seemed to me that the engine did not have as much oomph (technical term) as it usually has. I installed a GDP lift pump, no help. Plenty of fuel at the injection pump. Thought it might be the module on the VP44. Tried to remove it, but after removing the four obvious bolts, it wouldn't budge. The manual doesn't address this problem. Any thoughts? To put it another way - can the module on the IP be romoved, or is it part of the IP?

I'm right inthe middle of replacing a failed vp-44 and this is exactly the way it started after I look back on it.
Early this summer it started taking a little longer to start. I wrote this off as the starter as I had put a new one on a couple months earlier. Then as fall came around the cold starts got longer and slower. Again I wrote this off to ULSD and winter fuel. I also noticed the few times I used full throttle it started out slow and built up to power at about 2000 then at 2700 it defuels. Below 2000 it seemed down on power but I really didn't think it was the IP. I also had a slight drop in gas mileage. I keep very close watch and it dropped about 1-2. I used to get 21-22 mpg then it went to 20 then it became very hard to get over 19.5. Now with winter it was down to 17 which is as low as it ever get int he worst weather.
Then out of the blue it just quit. After a lot of checking and test it is clearly the IP so I now have one on the way and have a large crater where my wallet was haha if it is funny.
I'll post the whole story later
