Hard Complete Cold Start

Since the middle of this winter I have noticed that after my truck sits and COMPLETELY cools down and the temp is below say 25-30 F the truck is like a slug to start. I will hit the starter and it takes 2 very slow cranks then acts like it going to quit. If I stay into it it slowly (2 cranks/sec) cranks and gets a little faster and faster and then finally fires off. Once it's warm if I shut it down and let it sit for an hour or 2 it starts fine but if it completely cools it has trouble.

I have 2 new red tops as of jan. and my cables are tight. I know the starter contacts are my next area of concern and can easily be replaced but would they cause this only when cold? if it is starter related should I just spring for a new starter given it is the original with 400,000+ miles on it?

If it's turning over slow when cold, I would look at the starter contacts. Someone on here sells a replacement kit for around $30. Also check the grounds are clean & tight.

You should prolly do the bearings, bushing, and brushes while yer at it, all part of the dragging when cold symptom - 'nuther words, rebuild the entire starter along with the upgraded contacts - no worries fer another 10years if you do it right, this year................

I'm thinking the same as jd, the starter with 400,000 is likely very tired. pull it out, tear it apart and see what you find, worse case is to get a new/rebuild.
Contacts when they go bad generally you hear a "click" click", (not always), once you do open it up you will know for sure if contacts are at fault
