someone touched mine to looked like theycut the muffler resonator out in 1 piece turned it around and welded back in. striaght piped it last saturday love it, wife drove it yesterday didnt even notice so i wont tell.

My 99 has no muffler or resonator. They tell me it's LOUD. I love it. I do try to stay off it when Mr. Police Officer is nearby. I have not gotten any hassle from anyone since I lost my muffler, except some people I talk to, who say it's loud, and I just .
I'm gonna tell you now, you ain't sneakin anywhere if the muffler and resonator are missing. I heard secondhand that my dad told someone he could hear me from the time I left his house to the interstate. The interstate is 4 miles away , and I don't even have the PM3 on there right now. I haven't thought to ask him if that's really the case though. It's definitely a head turner. Never seen a D'max or P'stroke get that kind of attention.

If you put twins on there it will quiet it down a LOT!

So anyway, back to your question. I bought 5' of straight 3.5" pipe and 2 band clamps from Napa. I cut in front of the resonator and split the pipe at the back of the muffler because the axle bend was immediately behind the muffler and I needed the straight part at the muffler to clamp to. Once I had the old parts cut out and removed, I supported the tailpipe at the position I wanted (angle), and level with the downpipe up front, and measured. Cut the straight pipe and band-clamped it in. Nuttin' to it.

Shaders, I did the same as Stamey a couple weeks ago and love it, and I have not even gotten around to actually putting my piece of straight pipe on yet....it just stops under the cab for now. Maybe I'll get to it this weekend, but going through the neighborhood is fine. I don't get on the throttle until I see that temp guage budge anyway in the mornings.

2. You guys have given me advice not to stomp on it next to a cop.... how is at 55-75mph??? Am I trooper bait??

3. How about going through a cop infested town at 25mph?? (Merchantville if anyone knows S. Jersey)

4. Is it true the engine is a tad more effecient??

5. Anymore pros and cons about the resonator being on or off??

1- Resonator was put in by Dodge to fill up the space left when they got rid of the catalytic converters, it only cuts the drone (by muffling a little bit)
Guess it was cheaper than designing a whole new exhaust system.

2- 55-75 cruising, I don't notice anything, it's only if you romp on it that it sings it's loudest. A little louder going up a hill at that speed.

3- Same, just don't romp on it by one.
If you do happen to get pulled over, just tell them it's a Diesel, and they are that loud due to the combustion process and high pressure fuel injection system.

4- Yup, no restriction so the exhaust gets out quick.

5- Not really.

you won't regret it. Beleive it or not this morning I witnessed an auto accident. so I called cops. after the officer arrived all he said was "sounds nice" but can you shut her down please so I can make a report good thing no injuries. except to the ford totaled.

 

It won't hurt anything to try going straight piped, at least you'll know what it sounds like. You may like it and stick with it or you may hate the drone and reinstall the resonator or add a different muffler.

 

Actually Steve I think I may leave the resonator on to ease the drone!!

 

I still say there's no reason to straightpipe (other than sound) with the weenie stock exhaust.

Now, straightpipe a 4" and THEN you will have some sound-- and drone

I never noticed any difference in throttle response of fuel mileage with my muffler removed. But I have no regrets as the sound is AWESOME!

I have found an "enclosed" overpass where the road is small and the bridge tunnel is long, with verticle concreate walls all the way up. As soon as I get in there I stomp it and it sounds COOL! I can even hear the turbo spooling down when I let out of it. Sounds like a scream getting softer.
And I have a stock truck, right now.
