GPS install and band specs

been reading all morning and just wanted to ask how tough a job is changing out the GPS and what the specs are for band adjustment....truck will not drop back down into 1st gear at a full stop, will be doing fluid and filter while in there but this is my first trip into the 47re (been inside plenty of t350 t400's and pg,

also if anybody know part #'s i'll need for the GPS truck is an 01, would be really handy

Easy enough, I change the solenoid at the same time. Do you have a code thrown?

I am guessing 30 Min or so to replace the sensor and solenoid the last time I did it, messier than it was difficult.

Front band back off 3 turns, then torque to 72 Lb/In, then back off 2-7/8 turns and hold while tightening locknut to 30 Lb/Ft.
Rear band, back off 5-6 turns, then torque to 72 Lb/In., back off 2 turns and hold while tightening locknut to 25 Lb/Ft.

Sensor is the same from 42RE thru 47RE, I get mine from transmission parts USA, never had an issue with them.

BTW, you might want to get a factory service manual for your 01, they are available for 35 bucks as a .PDF at Geno's, or you can search the net.......

no codes, just when stopping at a light or stop sign i'm leaving in second gear most of the time anyway, sometimes it will drop back into first...haven't hauled any heavy loads, but will need to soon, shifting manually into first works fine...thanks for the heads-up on the service manual and the parts supply info, i need to order the manual and a dash pad from geno's...

Much easier on a lift than on your back but I agree with above - messy to empty it, but once you're in there very straight forward job, a few minutes more than switching out the filter really.

I have the same problem with mine not dropping to first unless I come to a complete stop. I just replaced the speed sensor a couple of months ago due to no/late shifts. Is the GPS a sensor or a solenoid? And is the solenoid the issue with the no 1st gear problem?

G=Governor P=Pressure S=Solenoid and yes this very well could be your problem. There is a switch and solenoid - both require replacement for best outcome.

Yep, as bloody cheap as they are relative to laying in ATF fluid the second time, I always replace them in pairs.

Well considering my pan did not seal after replacing the speed sensor I have to drop it again anyway so I might as well replace them. Does anyone have part numbers and can they be had at NAPA or Autozone? I am going to get a replacement pan gasket from Dodge since it looked to be reusable. Mine had a large ding in it that had been filled with epoxy from the P/O. Actually his shop since he had the dealer do all his work. Can you believe the dealer would not replace a dinged gasket?!

rick, I always order mine from the link above, but yea, any reasonably well stocked parts store should be able to get them if they don't have in stock. LOL, Make sure you are setting down when they price that pan gasket to you, they were over 50 bucks 6 years ago..... But worth EVERY penny.

OK, GPS and what switch? I figured the gasket would be expensive. If it doesn't leak and I can reuse it then it is worth it. My Dodge dealer does not carry anything at all for the diesels and I would like to do this over the weekend, that is why I asked about local stores. Also why I asked about the switch, most of the time a switch is good or bad so if it is the gear position switch then I would have starting issues if it were not working. The scanner is showing no problems with gear position. I figure if I can get it I will replace it but I might have to get that from the dealer and that is always a week wait.

OK, Question here. I go to the link above and the pressure solenoid is 40 some dollars. I call the dealer and it is 125.00 and Autozone is 134.00.. Am I missing something here? Why would it be 1/3 the price online? I am a firm believer in the saying "if it sounds to good to be true, it probably is". That is a BIG difference in price. Help me out guys, am I looking at the same parts here?

I know it is hard to believe, but I have never had issues with the parts from them. Specifically, these are the 2 parts you will need for a 98.

I would verify that you are getting the good pan seal, 25 bucks is way below what dealer cost was back several years ago, the one I am talking about almost looks like it is plastic, you can hold it straight out and it will not sag.

Well, Got the sensors and the TFOD kit, Spent all day putting it together and...................................It will not shift! Something went wrong. I did everything by the book. read the **** book ten times before I even started and this is not the first Trans-Go kit I have done, It is the first one with all of this drilling and that made me nervous. Rightly so as it turns out. I guess I trashed a good valve body. I followed every single direction and took my time and had the whole valve body section of the FSM printed out and with me also. I need this truck like yesterday, any suggestions on where I can pick up a good valve body? Do not say a wrecking yard because they do not exist in NJ. Everything is scrapped here.
