Governor?

I haven't had the nerve to test it but am I correct in assuming that the ISB is limited to red line RPM? In other words, if I put my foot in it sitting still in neutral will it go to red line and stop there without any major explosions?
Re:Governor?

I'm replying humorously. As one of my Air Force supervisors said one time, "Go for it. Nothing Beats A Success Like A Failure."

That said, I wouldn't want to try it with mine. However, if you do it, let us know what happens. Have your video camera ready - it could be interesting seeing pieces of a Cummins flying all over your yard. Get some good pictures - there's a lot of us who've not seen the inside of a Cummins.

I took my 98 in to the Bosch shop for a "tune up" and when they floored the engine with it just sitting there, I almost came unglued . I haven't done it with my 01 but my next door neighbor did. It's loud but the engine governor (electronically controlled) works just fine.

Re:Governor?

So you're saying that when I'm teaching my daughter to drive the 5 speed and she forgets to let off of the accelerator when she uses the clutch and the RPMs shoot up there :'(, that no damage will be done? ???

CR

Re:Governor?

Well they do say to use higher weight valve springs when you up the governered RPM on a 12v... so I don't know about you over-valved people. You might already have heavier vavle springs since your redline is slightly higher.

Re:Governor?

I have put this in another thread a while back but the breakin proceedure of a 238 detroit went something like this. Ten minutes at a lower rpm, ten minutes at a higher rpm and thirty minutes at wot. That meant gently place a brick on the throttle and go have coffee. This was after new liners, pistons, etc. They are made to run wot think of coming off a hill loaded heavy, I do it all the time. Cummins says that 3000 to 3300 will not hurt it.

Re:Governor?

I'd just look to it that the engine is warm. When I drive in the mountains my rpms are up to 3200 very often.
In some of the excavators used over here the ISB is governed at 3750.
AlpineRAM

I have held my truck on the govoner a few times, and it dont do any damage. Believe it or not,, every time I run the crap out of my truck,,, and I mean REALLY run the crap out of it,,, I see an improvement in fuel mileage the next days following. Go figure!

Re:Governor?

yes, you'll float the valves in a 12v above 3500 rpms. at 4100 rpms some type of motor damage happen (i don't remember what), and if you make it to 5200rpms, then the bottom end of the motor will let go. otherwise, drive it like ya stole it.

I didn't say anything about that sudden clutch engagement she might make to slow the engine down.

Re:Governor?

The governor works beautifully. Had a couple of jack *** friends who thought it would be funny to throw my truck in 1st gear at 40 mph. Nailed 3500 and stayed there. No problem. I've had it in 4-low 1st gear and had it sit on the governor several times and nothing has happened. These engines are pretty stout. Quick question, is there a way to raise the rev limit on a 24 valve up to say 4000 or so? How would you go about securing the bottom end so it won't fly apart? I can only imagine the G-forces on the crank with the size of the connecting rodas and all on there. Lots of mass rotating around. Why can't we rev a diesel real high? Compression, boost, and weight of the internals all a factor?
