Getting a new fuel pump....

I dropped the truck off at the dealer today, talked to the tech and he said it could be the lift pump that set the P1693 and P0216. So they called me today and said it was a weak lift pump and said the injection pump should be ok cause I've been running the stanadyne lube additive. To me that is not very reassuring considering I have around 8000 miles left on my warranty. Kinda got the feeling that we'll do the least possible to make it out of warranty so you have to come back and drop $2000 with us.

So they are installing the intank conversion and the tech tells me that my gauge is only gonna show 5psi from now on and that a lot of people are worried about that. Yeah, I wonder why? I pulled it down to 6psi coming up Monteagle Sunday so if 5psi is all I am gonna get at idle what's it gonna do loaded? Push the fuel back into the tank and start bending the peg on my fuel pressure gauge?? They are fixing my leaky engine oil pan, did not really want them to put the sludge oil in it that they sell cause I just changed the engine oil 4 days ago and used Schaeffers. Also fixin my leaky wheel seal on the rear axle, but not my flapping in the wind mirror or my not so intermittent wiper switch.

Guess I better save my pennies for a new VP44 and a booster fuel pump, thinking about a FASS.

I think you have good cause to be wary of what they're doing, especially if you've had any issues like dead pedal. Not to mention I believe it's the the P0216 code that means the FPCM (part of the VP44) is no longer communicating (or is communicating intermittently) with the ECM. I had the dead pedal with my truck, along with P0216, and I replaced my VP44 and installed the FASS and my truck is better now than it ever was. I'd steer clear of the in-tank lift pump, as I'm not sure if the FASS will work properly if it has to pull fuel through the in-tank pump (or if it even can do this.) Better to have your original fuel tank module without the pump there, IMHO. If I were you I'd take the truck to another dealer, get a second opinion on the VP44 (and hopefully get it replaced without having to get the in-tank lift pump), and get the FASS now. I know it's going to entail spending money on the FASS to get your truck fixed the best way now while it's still under warranty, but it may save you money/trouble down the road...

Just another thing to take into consideration about some of the "techs" employed at the dealerships, before I changed out my VP44 and installed the FASS, I paid $81.00 at my local dealership for them to "diagnose" (read: "guess") my problem as a bad APPS. I sure am glad I listened to the advice I got from this forum rather than that "tech"...I did nothing with the APPS except move it out of the way to get at my injection pump...

Go to your local Cummins shop and pick up two of the "campaign" pumps. I get 20+ at idle and can't pull it lower than 17 psi at WOT.

If you feel that strongly that your pump is on it's way it wouldn't be hard to make sure it does before your warrasnty is up! But I would never suggest such a thing

There ya go, I like that--start the truck up, unplug the lift pump, and if it still runs rev it up a few times!!! You didn't hear that from me either though...

Only problem is, that the truck will run just fine for a long time without the lift pump. There are guys on these forums that ran with a bad lift pump for a couple of years, then replaced it and ran another couple and their VP44s ain't dead yet.

Fine then restrict flow to the VP until it's out of it's misery. If you get the 0216 then some damage has already been done. If they are not willing to check it to make sure it still falls into tolerance then they've got it comming. But again I will deny ever saying such a thing.

some do, some don't ....i was one that did run.but after i put a pusher pump on the frame and the wire broke it shut down.... i repaired the broken wire and away i went. i still have the original vp44 at 175000
i think it depends on why the lp fails

Well I got a dead pedal and a 216, and have never had low fuel pressure. The truck with the new VP44 is running better than new and mileage is back up a couple miles per gal. 52K I VP and original LP. SNOKING
