Question Gear lube brands and grades...?

I have a Limited Slip rear end and am overdue for a change. What oil should I buy and what gasket. I hear that the gasket in a bottle works, but hows bout a real original gasket ?

Front needs to be changed as well.......same grade and brand ?

PS... I know, I know... do a search..... but in my experiences it gets me nowhere and I rather have up to date info in case of new products.

Thanks

The "real original gasket" came in a tube. I hate the blue goo too, but the covers are not designed with a gasket rib, so they seal better with RTV than a real gasket.

Run Mobil 1 80W-90. Good stuff and easy to find, even at Wal-Mart. Same stuff front and rear, make sure to get some LS additive if you have a Power-Lok in the back.

Limited slip rear end. Make sure you get the additive so it doesn't become noisy after the fluid change. Most auto parts stores have it, or you can get it from the dealer.

I'm a Redline guy. 75-140 synthetic in the rear if you tow (per manual). 80-90 front and rear otherwise. Get the high end RTV like Permatex "the right stuff".

Every LSD is different. try it without the additive....if it chatters add it little by little. Too much will disable your LSD. Redline has their own friction modifier or the dealer stuff is highly regarded.

Many folks find that with synthetic they need no modifier at all.

Won't need the additive if you get Amsoil gear oil.

amsoil says its compatible. however if there is chatter to add their additive. a friend of mine said a certain valvoline did not need it. well it chattered and the additive cured it.

If you use amsoil series 2000 or royal purple you will not need the additive, and red silicone makes a great gasket

I used the series 2000 AMSOIL without the Additive and haven't had rear diff chatter in over 30,000 miles.

I've got Royal Purple in both diffs... NO LSD additive added either...

Before the Mag-Hytec covers, I used the Black Permatex for the gasket..

I'm a Redline guy, too. Their lubes have earned my respect, and even if using their engine oil doesn't make sense in a CTD, having Redline everywhere else has worked very well for me.

I changed the fluid last night and was happy to see no metal shavings on the magnet. Only thing that looked was a little fit of foam. That is not too suprising. I put in Valvoline synthetic 80-90 and dont notice any noise back there (as if I could anyway with my exhaust !!) Thanks for the help.

PS... I would have used Amsoil or Royal Purple, but af all four shops in that one horse town, Valvoline synthetic was the best I could come up with.

Anyone know where I can find some Redline, I'm due for tranny and rear end change, and have been wanting to try that stuff. I'd just order it, but shipping on oil is .

Thanks,
Chris

I got mine from the local American Speed. www.myoilshop.com seems to have decent shipping prices also. They are in the Pittsburg area, might not be too far from you.

How often are you changing out the fluids in the rear diff (and front I guess)?? I put the RP in at about 5K miles or so and have close to 44K on the truck. I thought the dino was supposed to be changed around every 30K or so? yes/no? I would assume a good synthetic could go much longer?
