Fuel Pressure Question
Fuel Pressure Question
I'm new to the site and tried to do a search but didn't get anything.

I have a 2001 Cummins 5spd. My got a Westech guage, and my pressure is as follows:
13 PSI @ Idle, 10 PSI @ Cruise, 5 PSI @ WOT

Is this about right. Thanks, SEAN
Re:Fuel Pressure Question
First things first.
Welcome to the DTR. ;D
That's getting kinda low, especially the WOT reading.
8 psi should be the minimum.
I'm seeing 15 idle, 13 cruise, 11 WOT.
Stock pump with aftermarket Banjo Bolts.
Are you running a "Fueling" box?

I agree with "Shovelhead",......your WOT
reading looks low. Your lift pump may be
going "south" if the engine is still stock.

-------
John_P

Re:Fuel Pressure Question
I wouldn't panic yet. How many miles since you've changed your fuel filter? Where are you taking your reading from? Mine since day one was 14-15 idle, 12-13 cruise and 6 wot. My numbers were all taken at the schrader fitting on the VP44 with a Briar Hopper mechanical gauge. Given those numbers, especially the WOT number the dealer should have replaced it immediately (less than 8). I do question tho how the dealer takes a WOT reading. I don't let them touch mine. As you can see by my sig I now have an in-cab mechanical gauge taking the reading from the bottom of the fuel filter, banjos and modified fuel line. Same lift pump, I now have 16 idle, 14-15 cruise, and 10 at WOT (and that's on 5x5). Contact Rod at www.wildcatdiesel.com and he will fix you up. Hi-Flow banjos are good for about a 1-2 psi increase.
Hope this helps,
Roger

Re:Fuel Pressure Question
According to Cummins (1-800-diesels ??) the pressure at the back of the lift pump should NEVER drop below 10 PSI. I video taped the gauge (I had my dad drive while I ran the camera) I borrowed from the local high school shop, it showed 6PSI at WOT until governed (not pulling anything), then it would go back up to about 8PSI after the governor kicked in, I showed it to the dealer, he himed and hawed about Chrylser not testing anything but cranking and idle pressure. I told him that Cummins says 10 is minimum and we argued for a bit. He finally called Chrysler and they argued for a bit, but I did get the lift pump replaced under warranty (I think that was number 3, currently on number 5)
Re:Fuel Pressure Question
Yes, it is stock except for a K&N air filter and an aftermarket exhaust. I was talking to a couple other guys I know that have Dodge Cummins trucks, and we looked at the guage. And one of them said it looks like a fuel pump wire has been spliced. Still really don't understand what that means, but they said I basically don't have a warranty anymore. I'm pretty pi$$ed now since it only has just over 20k miles and I've only had it December 2002. I bought it used. I'm guessing this ain't good.
Re:Fuel Pressure Question
If just the pump wire on the VP44 is cut, I don't think they will hassle you on the lift pump. The little cut is probably to small for them to notice when changing a lift pump. I also don't think that they will look at the injection pump when they go to change out the lift pump. My first lift pump was 8 at idle and 0 at WOT. After arguing with the dealer that my FP gauge did not void the warranty, they replaced it. Second pump was 13 at idle and 6 at WOT with all new banjos. Put on the Holley black. Now I have 16.6 at idle and nothing less than 13 at WOT. ;D

Re:Fuel Pressure Question
Well, I took it to the dealership where I bought it and they said the warranty was invalid since truck has been modified. Modified as in it had some sort of fuel or timing box installed on it. I told them I didn't put anything but the exhaust on, that I bought it from them only a few months ago and that they sold it to me like that. They said something like "buyer be were" crap. Then went on to tell me they have put the VIN number into the nationwide computer system so if I take it anywhere else, they'll see the same result. I've never been that mad in my life. So when I left, I found the most expensive vehicle on the lot and kicked the out of it with my steel toe boots. I decided to get it fixed (out of MY pocket), sell it and never own another Dodge/DM product for the rest of my life. This sucks!
Re:Fuel Pressure Question
What did you kick man? A Viper? Bet that wasn't cheap. Sorry you had to put up with that but that's how it goes sometime. I wouldn't sell the truck. A lift pump ain't that bad. A VP44 however is bad.
Re:Fuel Pressure Question
man its just a lift pump nothing to get all ****** and get rid of the ctd! "y'ull b sorry" its only like $160 and it doesnt look likes its that big of a deal to change! just change it and keep the truck! going to the dealer sucks anyways there a bunch of morons anyways! better to do it urself and keep the truck! good luck!
Re:Fuel Pressure Question
Might be an expensive lesson for those looking at used Dodge/Cummins trucks. Or any used vehicle for that matter.
Have your/their service department run the VIN# for service records, or voided warranty before signing on the dotted line.
Lift pumps aren't that expensive (~$150) and take about 45 min to an hour to change. 8)
