fuel pressure
Hello again to all. This is Myles the piano rebuilder with another question for all you 24 valve enthusiasts. I just had my lift and injector pumps installed under warranty. The mechanic also installed a fuel pressure gauge for me so I can keep an eye on things.
1) Is there a "normal" psi range that my 2002 should stay within? Here are my current readings....15 at idle.....10-12 cruising.....and 6-7 WOT.
2) The mechanic mentioned something about "when the pressure drops down to 5 psi, it's time to change the fuel filter." Do you think he's talking about WOT or one of the other readings?
3) Is there a psi "low" range where it becomes necessary to change the lift pump before it takes out the I.P.? And what reading would that be under.... idle, cruise or WOT?
Thanks for attempting to answer my questions. As you can see, I'm a bit confused on what is the appropriate pressures. After all, what does a piano rebuilder know about diesels anyway?
Thanks guys!
Myles

There is a flow test that can be done. but, most of us feel that anything below 8 lbs, is too low at WOT. You should look at the max flow fuel lines. I know that 'Wildcat' sells one.
Do you have any mods done to the truck? Like a box or injectors?

No, the truck is pure stock. There have been no mods done to it whatsoever. Are you saying that only having 6-7 psi at WOT is going to cause a problem?
Thanks.....Myles

62 k miles and on my third lift pump, put the gauge on after truck was a couple years old and it read 10 to 11 psi at idle and would pull down to 3 to 4 at wot. Had it replaced, new one 14 psi idle and would pull down to 6 or 7 with Comp on 5X5. Lasted about a year or so then one day it read 14 then droped to 0 psi, seems the check ball spring broke.
You just have to keep an eye on them, I have a friend with a Y2k like mine who still has orginal pump and another with an 01 and is on his third pump. ? Good Luck.
