Interesting subject. Does anyone know the turn on and off sequence of the stock fuel heater?

Look at the top of your fuel filter housing. The two wires you see going into the top of the housing are the heater wires.

Thanks was wondering cause my friend (Chevy6.5) had his heater go out & it seems to be causing a hesiation problem so he has to get a new one & was just wondering if we had them & where they were, are they a sensor or what how exactly do they work? & what would the effects be in temp's below 40 degrees if it was not working?

Thanks!

They (both heaters) are computer controlled based on the outside temperature. At 40 degrees, probably little to no difference, below that, maybe a little slower start but not as noticeable if the intake heaters are working.
I started my old 89 at 10 below one morning in Pa, not by choice (the stupid place I stayed at in Breezewood would not let me plug it in), but everything was working and it fired on the first rev. It didn't hit on all six right away and sounded terrible but other diesels I've known in the past would still be sleeping if I had tried to start them at that temp. After about 8 to 10 seconds, she finally had enough heat to fire on all six and was good to go. I've been driving one of these since the first year they came out and they are pretty well built if you didn't know that already.
Drive and enjoy.

Thanks! now i'm wonderig if mine may be bad cause i've checked everything fuel filter & all & it just seems to crank over a few more times than normal if it's really cold out, & I have had the truck for 2 witers & never hada problem lie this before it would always start right up cold or hot, now though hot it will start fine & anything above like 40 degrees so I may have to checkto see if that's working, I also need new battery's but i'm not sure that would cause the problem the voltage drops & the check gauges light stays on for like a min. untul the batt's get aboce into the normal part. but i'm replacing those & if it fixes it then great if not i'm gonna check into that fuel heater i think!

The "slow to recover voltage meter" and check engine light when the Grid heater is on are signs of weak batteries.

I had that last year, and the problem went away when I replaced both batteries.

I just replaced mine back a few months ago due to leaking fuel out of the wire plug.

I tired to upload some picture but they were to big, here is a link that shows pictures of the fuel heater and how I changed mine out on my truck

According to the 2001 factory service manual the fuel heater operation is controlled by an internal thermostat that measures fuel temperature It goes on at 40°, off at 70°,
With these temps it seems like the heater would be on a lot in cold weather but the return fuel is very hot and warms all the fuel up very fast.

The grid heaters are controled by the intake air temp sensor.

I have an outfit called a "Diesel Fuel Liquifyer" on mine. I've sen them on farm equip. and the like. It's mounted right under the driver's seat in the frame rail, just a big blue can. It was on there when i bought the truck, i assume it helps a bit, no troubles @ 10 below, but i was plugged in for 4 or 5 hrs. It starts good at 5 or ten above on it's own.

OK, outside temperature, fuel temperature, whatever. They are computer controlled and usually work well. Have had no problems on any of the three trucks I've owned.
