fuel guage issue

Just a quick question in regards to my 2001.5. My fuel guage is not ready right at 1/4 tank of fuel my truck dies. I ordered a new sending unit from Dodge. How hard is it to change the sending unit in the tank I have a floor jack and the all the hand tools i need is there any special wrenches I need to change the sending unit. Any input would be a great help Thanks for your time Garry.

Although I haven't had to replace mine....yet.......it can be removed with common tools.

Several have found it is far easier to remove the bed attachment bolts and wire harness and jack up on side of the bed than to drain & pull the tank.

Very strange........ my reply just disappeared.....

It should come out with common tools.

Many have found it easier to remove the fuel filler, bed mounting bolts and wire harness and jack the bed up on the driver's side than to drain & drop the tank.

From: North Carolina or Kentucky. Take your pick
Another possibility is the fuel module is hanging up. Not floating as it should. Also these are very long tanks and going up long hill is easy to run fuel to back of tank and uncover pickup.

Where i live i don't have to worry about hills lol. Driving on a flat road the truck will die when it hits a 1/4 tanks of fuel. Is the sending unit and the pickup all in one or are they seperate components. I have a walbro lift pump mounted on the frame rail should i change the pickup to and put a bigger line in the tank will I have it apart?

Just did mine a few weeks ago. Disconnect batteries, unbolted one side of the bed and took the other side 1/2 way out. i used floor jack to lift the bed then bottle jack from the frame mounts to bed to lift it the rest i needed. The hardest part for me was to loosen the cap on the top of the tank for the module. Ended up wrapping a tie down around it and pulling it counter clockwise to break it loose. Be sure to lift the bed high enough to pull the module out of the tank. If I recall the module is 12 to 15 inches tall. To hook the wires from the new sender to the plug there is a green or blue lock tab on the plug you will need to pull to get the old wires out. Took me about an hour and a six pack to figure that part out. Started the job around 10:30pm and finished around 1:30 in the morning. Best part was that when I started the guage showed 1/2 tank and once i finished and checked the guage it was at 1/4 tank so I new it was my problem.
