Fuel Filter Change

Hey, My oil change is comming up and I am gonna replace the fuel filter as well and this is my first diesel and my first time doing this so this is probably a dumb question but where is the fuel filter? Does anyone have a pic of it? I saw something on the right rear side of the engine that I thought was it but if thats it then its inside of a metal case or something and I dont know but I wanted to change that. Also what fleetguard fuel filter should I get? Since were on filters what fleetguard oil filter should I get? Thanks

Re:Fuel Filter Change

wow changing the fuel filter and then trying to prime the fuel system sounds like a lot of work. The may having to bleed the lines kinda scares me, should I just let someone else do it?

By the way, thanks for all the info. It was very helpful..THANKS!!!

Re:Fuel Filter Change

It is not that hard to do! I have changed my fuel filter 3 times or so and never had to bleed the lines. Just bump the started a few times and you should be set. If you pay someone to do it : You are wasting money

Re:Fuel Filter Change

Oh, buy the filters directly from Cummins, cheapest I've found.

Genosgarage.com has a pretty good deal as well, a kit that comes with something like 3 oil, 2 fuel, and 1 air filter in a kit.

If you say, have the dealer do it, you'll get ripped big time in just the cost of the filter.
They sell oil filters for like $45.00 and you can get them from Cummins for under $15.00.

phox

Go to Cummins Parts/Service Locator to find the closest dealer/parts house in your area.

Re:Fuel Filter Change

Check out all the Big Truck shops in your area and ask if they carry Cummins parts and Fleetguard filters. Most of them will be able to get you the parts a fleet price if you ask nicely.

I buy all mine through an International shop called UHL Truck Sales. It helps if your brotherinlaw works there and is always borowing your tools too. ;D (he owes me big time)

The fuel filter change isn't that bad, just take your time and bump the starter several times after changing it before you restart the truck, It should fire right up. My dealer used to charge me over $90 to change the fuel filter, where I can do it for about $12.85.

DB
Re:Fuel Filter Change

Don't let the dealer change it. They will charge $40 for the filter, and $40 labor. I know cause my dealer insisted on putting in a new one before condeming my lift pump : $40 labor on a 10 minute job, man I am in the wrong business. That's about $240.00

Re:Fuel Filter Change

Last time I changed my fuel filter I bump the starter 4-5 times and it still didn't crank over. I finally opened the valve under the fuel filter and cranked it over, it took about 1min to let the air out. I don't think crankin' it over like that can be good for the starter. Did I do something wrong?

Re:Fuel Filter Change

I'm coming up on my first fuel filter change also. What exactly does "bump the starter" mean?.... what's the process?

Thanks

Re:Fuel Filter Change

It is listerally just a bump. If you turn the key to start for a split secont and release (even if the starter never fully engages) and listen, you will hear the fuel pump run for about 15 seconds or so. Do this about 3 times and your ready (assuming your pump is doing its job. Its a piece of cake to do. Just be aware t not use the square hole on the cover to remove it. Invest in a six point socket if you dont have one. The covers break easily. Take you time and clean things out. If your worried, you can add clean fuel back to the housing so there is less air. I originally did that but not just let the pump take care of it. Good luck.
Tim
