fuel filter

how do you change the fuel filter out on a 99' 3500, also are there only trouble codes only when the check engine light is on?

If its like my 98.5 just loosen the bolt in the center of the top of the housing, drop the whole lower unit down and remove the filter. Change out the fileter with the new one change the o-rings. I prefill the filter 3/4 of the way with clean fuel. Hold the housing up and turn the bolt until it snugs up. Too tight could cut the o-ring seal.

Bump the starter and wait a few seconds and repeat. This will allow the pump to finish filling the filter. Start as normal, you may have to hold the go peddle down a little until a little air gets through the system.

I don't know about your year truck, but my CEL has never lit, and I had 2 codes, P0236 and P0216.

My light came on when the rear speed sensor went bad. I also had the abs light. Changed the sensor and never had any more light problem. The only light I have heard of with the fuel filter is the water in fuel light.
