Yesterday I noticed a high speed vibration when going over 110 kph so I start poking around under the truck and see that one bearing on the front ujoint is destroyed. I'm pretty sure this would be covered under warranty, but wondering if there is a better way to fix it other than OEM parts. I removed the front shaft - is it OK to drive around this way? Thanks.

I've had mine off for 9 months,
destroyed the OEM shaft, put an aftermarket shaft and broke it as well.
Got the aftermarket replaced under their warranty, just haven't had the gumsion to put it back on.

So yes, you can drive with it removed no problem.

how did you get it replaced under warranty? I have an 02 and only warranty I have left is the 160K for the Cummins. I'm gonna have the from shaft rebuild for under $200CDN

 

The aftermarket shaft was replaced under it's warranty, not Dodge's.

Original shaft wouldn't have been covered due to my lift, so I didn't even try.

If you have warranty left, let them do it, otherwise just pop a new Spicer joint in there and she'll be good to go.

How'd you break them Phox?

 

First one, the CV joint let go, combination spinning all the time, and extra angle from the lift, and being ungreasable.

2nd one, popped a cap in one of the CV ujoints going through a mud hole, and the joint flopping around capless chewed everything up (lucky it didn't come through the floor board and take out my foot)

I have a 2001, does the drive shaft turn constantly? I posted a new thread about a bad vibration from the front end and want to know more.

 

Your 2001 has the CAD which will not allow the front shaft to turn in 2WD. Only the 02.5 trucks had the CAD delete which causes the front shaft to turn in 2WD.

 

Mine went at around 80K. The service guy said the entire driveshaft and U joints were replaced with new part numbers.

 

i noticed a whine coming from the front end after my accident when i hit about 40-45 mph. could this be the cause?

 

I don't think so, but who knows. The problem described above manifests itself as a growling noise, especially at high speed. Compressing the suspension like when going over humps in the highway surface, causes the growing to change in unison.

 

i tried to find the noise countless times. it never changes pitch. it makes noise or it doesnt! i even took it in to the collision center again today! i guess ill take the drive shaft out this weekend to see if it changes anything!
