Front crank seal

Little help please. This is the mahle front crank seal kit and I have no idea what that black ring is for. Did it come out of the new seal?

And, during this i pulled the seal off the plastic sleeve. When putting it back on the sleeve, the wider part of it goes in toward engine correct?
