Front Axle U-Joint / Warranty Question
Well I have had a sound coming from my left front wheel for about two days now.
It is speed dependant, not really loud (only heard with the window down), sounds like a high pitched whirring that is in sync with the axle rotation, and it is not the brake pads. My first guess is the U-joint going. Does any of this sound familiar? Does it have zyrk (spelling?) fittings? I have sprayed it down alot at the car wash, could that run it dry? Also, I bought my rig in Oct. 2002, I have 62K miles. I believe that it has a 7yr. 100K warranty, does that sound right? Also, has anyone had it replaced under warranty? If not, how much did it cost. A lot of questions I know.....thanks for any advice!
Tom

Yep, sounds like a u-joint. Mine was doing the same thing and I replaced it last weekend. Some have zirk fittings and some dont, if its a dana spicer joint it probably does not. I would recomend just replacing it.
Yep, sounds like a u joint to me also. As far as warranty replacement, don't hold your breath. Asking the dealership to replace a front u joint is like asking them to replace a tire because it's going bald. A new u joint should cost no more than 20 bucks and u can replace it in your driveway in a few hours if you're a fairly good mechanic. There's a difference of opinion on going with a joint that is/isn't greasable. Some say that the holes bored in the joint for grease weaken the strength of the joint. If you don't punish your truck with big tires and hard off road use, it shouldn't be an issue for you. Just depends on if you want to worry about greasing your u joints once in a while.
