6 ply tires kill front end?

Guys i have a weird issue. maybe some one can make light of it.

I recently about 6 months ago bought a set of used 265x75xr16s for my truck, had maybe 5k miles on them. well now maybe 10k miles later, I have 4 bad ball joints, and had to replace all the steering compoents in my truck and they are badly warn almost bald!

yes i tow, 30' toy hauler.

against my better judgement i have continued to use them with out any problems so far.

question is could a set of unpropper rated tires cause pre mature steering/suspension wear?

Ball joints at 160k are to be expected. You are lucky you went that far. Hopefully they did not cost you too much by taking other items with them.

ya i just ordered the last piece for my tie rods today. should be here wednesday. kinda bumbed though cuz thurben has a cross over steering kit for not much more. O well.

He did say that the track bar made more of a diff then the cross over steering, Prob replace that after i get the ball joints tires and align.

I love this forum so much help, so many brilliant folks to offer help/support/advise!

Definetly saved my butt quite a few times. I Think i use this site just as much as my Trusty Dodge service manual! eeh maybe more!

You are towing a 30' trailer with 6 ply tires under a Cummins??? You must be kidding?? Im sorry, but that is downright irresponsible - 6 ply C rated tires do NOT have anywhere near the proper load rating.

they have lasted on 5 trips so far i have put over 8k miles towing with them with out a problem. But i have noticed they are wearing twice as fast as the last tire. I will be swaping them out with new tires soon.

O ya, A tire shop sold those to me and i didnt realize they had put 6 plys on their till after it was all said and done. The guy at the shop who installed them (who coincedentally no longer works their) said they will work no problem bro!

ya i realized after the fact i had made a mistake with them!

tires and wear.

I use Michelin M/S 235/85 16's they are wonderful. Now if the truck was!!!!!!! Sorry didn't read all the replies, too tired. Get the greasable ones and pump them full of synthetic grease. before they are installed. As well as the rest of the componants. Don't know if you do, but only turn the steering wheel as you are moving. Before you stop,( say 3 to 4 feet ) start to turn your steering wheel in the opposite direction. This gives you a great lead for turning the opposite way. This reduces the wear and tear on steering componants and tires. The more agressive tires are the worst.

You are putting yourself and innocent people at HIGH RISK!!!!!!

If you are in an accident, the Lawyers will EAT YOU ALIVE (if you live)!!

The door placard states CTDs REQUIRE "E" LOAD tires!!

Do some research on tire LOAD INDEX and LOAD CAPACITY.

Here's a couple threads...

Go get your owner's manual and look up the GVW and axle weight ratings for your CTD and then look at this tire LOAD CAPACITY Chart below!

Here's the Load Index Chart.

A 285 compared to a 315 is a pretty noticeable difference. Why don't you look at some 305s?

Katmandu,

Thank you very for pointing that out. 5 out of 9 posts told him that his tires were under rated.

neveragain,
What are you talking about? Your post seems a little vague. Turning more will reduce the wear on your frontend?

My Dad always told me to make a front end last, don't slow down, or accelerate while turning. Never turn to sharp, only just sharp enough, and slow down for bumps, but not while going over them.

I don't listen, but then, it's the Pay to Play scenario all over again.

Cool

It seems to me that you are going to need balljoints & tierod end at 70-100k. How you turn the truck will probaly have little impact on this fact. Tires wear out, oil needs changing, brakes, clutch(rebuild auto tranny?). You drive, things wear out, you get the checkbook out.
