exhaust upgrade

Looking to upgrade stock exhaust system to 4 inch diameter. I guess stainless is the way to go compared to alluminum. Are there any pros or cons between the two types 409/304?

I think stock one is aluminized and there's nothing wrong with it. Besides the fact that it's restrictive as you start adding power. I'd check ebay, there's good deals on brand name exhausts. MBRP, Diamond Eye, etc.

I have the lesser grade stainless steel MBRP exhaust on my truck. At the time, it was only $40 more than aluminized. It will show some surface rust over time but shouldn't rust through anywhere. I can't remember what number represents what grade. 6 years and counting, and it's holding up fine.

Stainless will last you a very long time and would be a particularly good choice if you live in an area where they salt the roads heavily in the winter.

Normally though, stainless exhaust on a diesel vehicle doesn't get you anything extra except a larger bill. You have to remember that a gas vehicle's exhaust is mostly water vapor, where diesel exhaust contains virtually no water vapor. So stainless makes much more practical sense with gas vehicles vs. diesel.

If you just plain want stainless over aluminized, it's hard to argue with that--most of the stuff on my truck is there because I wanted it, not because I needed it.
