Engine year ?

24v gurus I have a question for you. I am going to be looking at a 95 dodge truck that the owners burnt the original engine up in. Instead of having a reman engine put in they insisted on a new engine. Well since they no longer made a 12v engine (for automotive apps anyway) a new 24v engine and computer was installed. Is there any way to tell what year engine was put in? At this point I don't know what year the replacement engine was installed. I do know that the engine was detuned to help the auto tranny survive. If I did get this truck I would for sure want to do some upgrading and since the year makes a difference
as to what programmers to use this information would help. Any ideas would be welcome.

Thanks,

One hint is the crank sensor. If it has one it is an earlier engine. That is the sensor about the middle of the crank. 98, 99, 00 used it then they went to just the cam sensor. Get the numbers off the timing case, go to Cummins and they will tell you what you have. CPU number will tell you that and the seial number will also. Detuned? I doubt it. Early 24v engines were no more powerful, just higher rpm max resulting in higher advertised hp, same torque.

Thanks Haulin, hadn't thought that far as to look up the CPU number. As far as detuned, this is the story second hand. The guy who was telling me was telling about his daughters truck. I don't know the mileage on the truck or the engine that is now in it but it was used hauling horses in New York state. The truck is in rough shape but the price is about right if the engine turns out to be in decent shape. If I do get it, it would be a project truck anyway and all I need is the running gear and a straight frame. I might get to look at it this week. If'n I do I'll try to post back on the story of why this was done. Again thanks.

Hmmmm project truck. I just purchases a 97 4wd, club cab, tow body, cow catcher for $2000. Cab is a little rough but nothing a little body work and a paint job would not handle. Engine seems good, 3rd gear syncros are out, as well as the fifth nut is off. I have a good nv4500 and a near new LUK Progold clutch.

Good luck with it, I was trying to figure how they could detune it.... Commercial vp44 would lower rpms, but add more fuel, smaller commercial injectors would detune it some. Not much else you could do. Might just have a full commercial lower rated engine..... which is good, a lot of potential.
