Engine temp too low when outside temp is below 30

I have searched and seen this beat to death on other threads, but I would like to pose this question anyway.

Does anyone have an UPDATED site to get a radiator air flow blocker?

I used cardboard last winter to no avail.

The temp gets below 30 and the truck wont even register in operating range, this effects the heat of the air coming from the heater, and its COLD.

I have seen where flushing out the heater core and replacng the thermostat helps... Does anyone have the part number for the Cummins brand Thermostat?

I am willing to try alot to get this squared away, but taking my wife and kids anywhere in the winter is next to impossible...

I am in North AL South TN, and it has been FRIGID the last 2 winters, and this one is no exception...

Has anyone tried installing Electric fans on a thermostat switch in place of the drive fan? Is there anything that might get messed up with doing that?

Thanks All

same prob here im in NC on the coast and its been in the low 30's and single digits today and my temps are not even moving on the dash I had to read it on my edge just to make sure it was actually heating up and it is but just not enough. I called the dealership to see about the winter cover for the front but they dont make them anymore for an 01? go figure! so I put a piece of cardboard in between the radiator and intercooler and it got up to 190 in about 10 min so I think I found my cure I just cut a hole in the middle about 5-8 in in diameter. Im actually driving to Indiana this week so Im hoping this will work for me as well because its well below zero up there.

Sounds to me that you need a t-stat. It was 19 here this morning and in 10-15 minutes temp up to 190 and heat blowing. I cannot figure anything else that would cause the temp not to go up to operating temperature. Yours is stuck open allowing it to cool too much. Sorry no part# but a quick search found this

It definitely sounds like something else is wrong beyond cold air getting to the rad. When its around freezing, my truck doesn't have issues getting up to temp at all. Sounds like your t-stat is bypassing.

Call Jeff at Mumau Diesel, he's a Cummins dealer, and supposedly has unbeatable prices.

I agree, its probably the t-stat. I left work this afternoon and it was around 20 degrees outside, the engine was cold too....20 degrees. It didnt take more than 15 mins on the road for the engine temp to reach 190.

You can change a Cummins' thermostat in less than a half hour. It is quite simple. I just replace the coolant I catch in the spill tub.

x whatever on the thermostat- it has been crazy cold the last three weeks (11 last night, below zero with wind chill), 20's during the day, and mine heats fine. I use nothing to block air. Blocking the radiator helps it to heat up faster, but it should get up to temp, regardless.

I had the same promblem and temps were only 35 to 40. Changed t-stat and coolant, now temps 190 in 5 to 8 min. Suggest you changed t-stat, 26.00 at AutoZone.

Actually, the last one I bought right from Cummins was over $100 too. I still don't like using aftermarket ones in these trucks.

I just did all this.
dealer was 36.00
easy change!!
buy 4 foot section of hose.
stuff it down in the radiator.
pull over flow tube off
put hand over radator neck
blow in tube to get siphon going.
removed 2 gallons

three bolts hold the thermostat housing on

while I was waiting for the siphon to drain the radiator down
I pulled the heater core hoses loose from the motor and flushed it out with a garden hose and barb fitting. (it was 40 that day).

pulled out the autozone waste of metal thermostat and put in the much more robust dodge one.

filled it up with fresh coolent

HEAT,, HEAT,,, driving warm up about 6 miles to reach 190 with it being 15 out side.

checked coolent mix and it was good down to neg 45.

I was a bit shocked at how much crap came out of the heater core..

some po had put stop leak in it

oh, drain out the over flow bottle also. mine had a lot of crap in the bottom of that also.
