Engine Performance Upgrade
On tues. I took my truck in to the dealership to have the oil and fuel filter changed and had them diagnose it for engine power loss. Turns out the lift pump was on it's way out. The service sheet said the old pump had 24 oz. of flow and the new one now has 55 oz. of flow. I don't have a FP guage so I don't know what the psi is.
They also "reprogramed the Engine Control Module for engine performance". Has any one had this done? At the risk sounding stupid. What exactly does it do?
Thanks
Dave

Anytime a dealer plugs into the truck under warranty, the firmware verson is checked, if there is a updated version it is installed or flashed, this is paid for by cummins or dodge. kinda double dipping if you ask me, the buzz word is preformance upgrade. could be a nunber of things. In the case of my truck there were 5 changes involved.

Dodge/Cummins didn't pay for it I had to So what exactly does it do? Inject more fuel? I'll get to test it this weekend. I'm pulling a trailer with a covered wagon on it from Ogden, UT to Malta, ID so I'll get to find out how it pulls

The only "performance" update for the 01 that I can think of was a change in the fuel mapping in OD. Before your truck would defuel in OD. This was an attempt I believe in DC trying to not hit the transmission in OD as hard by reducing the power output slightly. With the update you now have the same fueling in OD lockup as you do in 3rd lockup.

I wouldn't worry.
Earlier software "reflashes" caused some mileage problems but and software upgrades for the 24v trucks, since about Jan,2003, have helped both performance and mileage. Should run better than ever!
