Engine light on and temp guage jumps up at idle

I just got in from a quick run to town and the engine light comes on and I notice the temp guage going higher and higher at a stop light. I take off and it settles down to 190*. I checked under hood and it smells like warm coolant. I have no leaks, coolent still in reservoir, and obviously too hot to pop the cap on the radiator. I checked oil and it is fine (no water in oil).Any ideas as to what is going on I think I remember hearing that some autoparts will lend out a scan tool..... is that true?

Yes, Autozone does, as well as other major chains.
More of a scan in the parking lot then lending it out though.

C.I.L was probably just saying "it's hot".

Not sure as to the other, but a guess would be a sticking thermostat.

I took off before your post but thanks anyway for the instructions. One note..... it says in that link that a 10mm socket is needed. It is actually a 8mm socket. I know this because that was the only one I didn't bring with me
