Im looking into buying a truck, 2002 24 valve with a 6 speed, he says it has 54,000 original miles, banks kit, injectors, and some other mods. He is selling it because when he started it up it started making an engine knocking noise. its for sale for $6500. I have rebuilt a bunch of gas motors, but never a diesel, but have read they are similar. what could this be? a spun rod? maybe a broken piston? i have not yet gone to see the truck, or heard it run, just trying to get ideas. Where would you recommend getting a rebuild kit?

 

it could be something as simple as a bad injector. that will make them knock.

 

I would have a Dealer that has a good truck dept diag it first. If it's injector can usually be fixed for about $600. But if you have piston or rod going out looking a $5000 or more. Might be worth the $100 to have it properly checked out. Or find yourself another truck to buy with all the mods on it may have had a hard life.
