Engine block #53...How to tell?
How can you tell if you have a #53 engine? If you do what are the issues and what should one do to help prevent any problems? Thanks for the info.

Look on the block just to the rear of the oil filter. The block numbers are stamped/engraved into the flat face of the block there and will start with a 53 or 56.
Sorry I can't remember the issues with the 53 blocks.

The casting number is located on the drivers side of the block, just above the oil pan flange, toward the front of the engine. As a reference point, locate the fuel injection pump while lying under the truck. Look on the block about an inch or so above the oil pan, straight below the fuel pump.

All of the blocks made after the "53" such as 54,55 and 56 were modified and have no history of cracking.

Look for coolant leaks coming from the engine and I do not know of any fixes unless your covered under warranty.
