Look at the drivers side of the block towards the front above the pan rail,it will be cast in.

Above the oil pan.

Squat in front of the drivers side front tire.
Look on the engine, right above the pitman arm.

I see a "??5K 1" with a big "56" under it.
(?? is behind a wire loom)

ah... can be seen from the engine bay or do you have to crawl under?

And I seem to recall that by late 2001, the "53" block and KDP were no longer problems?

Thought I read here there were alot of "53's" in 01. Not sure about the KDP, shouldn't be hard to find a thread

The casting is easy to see from outside the well, no need to crawl under.

#53's have thin castings at the water jacket.......they tend to crack much easier and readily than the #56's or the others.

Were there any 53's for 02? I might go look at an 02 HO and if there's a chance, it will be the first place I'll check out.

the casting numbers on a 53 are close to an inch tall and are cast into the block (not stamped) - if you dont see that, you dont have to worry.

Ok I dont see any numbers on it like that. Was cold out. Did a quick looky see. So did any blocks come without any numbers like that on them? Or has my block been replaced prior to me? Got the truck used.
