Driving with bad VP-44??

Hi All,

I'm really new to this place. I've owned an 01 Dodge CTD 4x4 for 2 1/2 years. A couple of weeks ago I started having problems. Found your site, WOW most of you are more informed than the dealer.(I know thats a BIG surprise )

Anyway had transfer pump replaced under warranty last week, problem persisted, returned to dealer showing codes p0216 and P1693. Now they are telling me that the injection pump is bad---can't get one in for a minimum of 5 days, and that I should come and get my truck.

I'm a bit concerned that I could cause damage to the engine by driving it like this--not to mention that its a pain in the posterior. Any thoughts would be appreciated. TIA Magnum

I would leave it with the dealer,because when the pump does give up the ghost you are stuck and waiting on a tow truck to come get you,and this being a warranty tow your going to sit awhile because the driver does not make much on a dealer tow been there done that.

Just to ease your mind... driving with a busted pump will NOT hurt your engine one bit... sleep easier.

don't worry I drove mine for a week with a bad pump. no dammage to engine. but some dammage to dealer trust. by the way I drive 40 miles each way to work. pump never failed completly. FYI If you havn't changed your fuel filter now is probably a good time to do it ;D

Getting a VP is not an in and out same day procedure for most dealers unless they have managed to "aquire" an injection pump. You have to run tests, call Chrysler tech and give them the "song and dance" so that they will send you out an injection pump. That can take a day minimum, sometimes more if they have to get it from a different depot. You must have hit your dealers during the christmas rush Magnum. The zone parts warehouse for DC dealers is right where you live.

I was "Informed" :-X that the pump was having to be shipped out of Denver....And I wasn't even :-*

Two weeks ago, driving on the interstate, 75MPH. suddenly felt like someone reached over and turned off the key, except of course, the engine was still running. Floored it, just nothing, as I slowed to about 50, then everything came back alive again. This would repeat again and again. I could remedy it by slowing down to about 60mph, or when I ran into the wall, just push in the clutch and let it idle for a second, and back we go!
Dlr diagnosed a bad lift pump.(this is when I discovered this site) Lift pump was replaced last week, SSDD now its back in the shop for the past 3 days awaiting an injection pump.
If you know how to pull codes, see if you're getting a P0216, or 1691/1693. Let me know :'(

I too am suspecting my VP44 :'(

My truck has been a problem for me for awhile and sometimes it runs REALLY good and strong and other times it runs weak and even stumbles. I have noticed that it sometimes has a strong miss momentarily when under full throttle.

The long and short of it is I cannot set my watch by it and I never know how it is going to run.

VP44?

Ps I recently installed a Fuel Preporator and fuel guage on it and run a constant 16psi idle and 13psi WOT. I suspected that my lift pump was toast before the Fuel Preporator install but had no guage at the time.
