Don't always trust error codes
A while back, I had to get a new lift pump. I was about 2 days from home, with limited tools, but the pump was on warranty anyway, so I started looking for a dealer. By the time I found one, my truck could barely pull itself away from a stoplight. Sure enough, they said the lift pump was shot, but that they were getting a timing code from the injection pump, it needs to be replaced! I said forget it, replace the lift pump and I'd be on my way. I couldn't afford to replace the injection pump at that time. They did what I asked, cleared all the codes, and 85,000 miles later, had to go in for something else. Low and behold, no pump codes! If I'd had money at that time, it would have been wasted. From now on, if I get a code, (at least for something major like that) they are gonna get erased, then driven a few miles, then re-checked. I feel that the lift pump was so bad, the injection pump had to work extra hard and buggered the timing. Just glad it didn't knock it out. This was all before I realized a bad lift pump would take out an injection pump.
