Doing the VP and PSP seals, some ?s
Just getting around doing the VP seal and the PS.
I have alot of wetness under the 2 so I guess I will be removing and replacing seal and gaskets all together.
MY QUESTION is:
While I'm removing these 2 pumps who can I know and/or test to know the 2 pumps are good and dont need replacing.
I think my PS is good because it seems to work right.
Now as for the VP I dont know. My brakes power work well but I wonder if the VP is good or needs rebuilding while I'm in there!!!???!!!
My cruise does'nt work even though the light turns on in the truck, is that related to the VP? The blow by tube is rerouted back with a long hose to drip into a bottle on the transfer case skid pan but it smokes some when truck is idling and hot. IS THIS NORMAL or excessive blowby caused by bad vaccum of seal bad on VP TO PSP?
Thks and sorry so detailed but will be tearing apart soon and want to have all parts here.

If you have excess blow by, it won't be caused by a seal in the vacuum pump. If anything other than the engine, it will simply be a leaky vacuum hose or component somewhere else in the system. The vacuum pump very rarely causes any other problem than a visible oil leak.
As for the VP44, if it isn't causing any noticable driveability problem, and you don't feel like replacing it with a rebuilt unit just because, you may as well just re-install it. I don't know of anyone doing any repairs or custom rebuilds on them, so you may as well use it until it blows up. Upon removing it, you may find the rear support bracket is broken. You can weld it back together if you have the means, or replace it with an updated bracket available at Cummins.
On the gasket between the vacuum pump and the gear housing, I have found they can be troublesome to seal, so I usually give a coating of Ultra Grey RTV sealant to both sides of the gasket before installation. I believe the service manual even recommends this, even though it is a composite gasket.
