does this sound accurate?

My truck has been acting a little funny , shifting weird at about 1800rpm sort of like the tranny sticks and the whole front end will start to shimmy and a serious decrease in HP, so I took it to my mechanic and he put it on the computer and he says the torque converter, selinoid is bad. I just had the input/output sensor, govenor sensors and a few other sensors fixed in November. He says it will be about $650 parts and labor to fix the converter and that will be replacing it with a new HD converter rather than the stock converter since I am using the truck for towing my horse trailer. My truck is a 99 Dodge 2500 short bed 2wd quad cab with the 24 valve Cummins diesel. He says if any of the pieces of the converter have gotten into the tranny we may have to rebuild and that will be about $1300 parts and labor but he won't know until he drops the tranny pan. Does all of this sound right? I am always afraid that I am going to be taken advantage of because I am not mechanically inclined and I am a woman. I understand how everything works I just am not skilled enough to rebuild my own transmission or anything. Please give me a little imput. Thanks!

First welcome to the DTR.

Third i would take it to a good tranny shop in your area and have a transmission mechanic look at it. Let us know where you are from and i am sure someone here will know of one in your area.

how many miles?

post up your general location - might be near a tranny shop that folks can recommend.

a better deal might be to buy a tranny from a diesel specialist (ATS, Suncoast)
and have your local guy put it in.

my buddy had a Local Yokel shop put 3 tranny's in his old truck.
he finally traded it in.

what kind of warranty is he offering?

Welcome to DTR

You have come to the right place for straight answers and no bull....well at least not a lot of bull. While I agree with the previous posts, the information you were given seems resonable, not out of line at all, but the prices seems low to me. If you pull alot the stock converter is a weak link. Your mechanics recommendation for a heavy duty one was right on the money. The question then becomes which torque converter to replace it with.

Where do you live? This can help us give you more options.

I will fill in my profile as well but here is the info you requested: I am driving a '99 3/4 ton short bed diesel with 129,000 miles. Automatic, 2 wheel drive, K & N air filter, gooseneck hitch with electronic brake box. Nothing else fancy I can think of. I am just East of Cincinnati, OH. I use the truck for everyday driving as well as towing a horse trailer. Does this info help?
