Disapointed in truck right now

Yesterday I helped my brother move home. So I borrowed a 24' eclosed trailer from a friend. I'm guessing the whole rig weighed 10,000#. It was pretty windy but there were many times I could'nt get 50mph. As much as i hate to say it I wished I had my 01 PSD, But I will admit the PSD I had would not have gotten 9.8 mpg like the old DC, and most of the 415 miles I had it flat footed, in 4th & 5th.

That don't sound right. How strong was the wind? Is your rig running OK?

I suppose the wind was 30-35mph. From what I could tell I was getting it from the side and front.

Wow at only 10K you should not have any problem, even with a good head wind! I have towed much heavier horse trailers and flatbeds with both of my trucks and not had any trouble. I would definately be looking to find a problem somewhere...

You're truck isn't running right....

Like others have said even with a big head wind you should be able to drive as fast as fear or common sense would allow on the flat.

I would start too look for a boost leak possibly either the intercooler boots are not sealed up right or they are torn.

Check or better yet replace the map sensor and the IAT sensor...about 100 dollars for both give or take from Cummins and go from there. Also your regular culprit, your fuel filter. Even though your rig will not throw codes, a map or iat sensor that is not working properly will have similar effects consistent with what your describing.

Was the "10K" combined??? or was that your estimated weight of the trailer???

....if the trailer weighed that much I would say you have 3.55 gears. Pulling a box against a head wind is no easy chore. To be perfectly honest I was less than impressed with my 01 when I first got it. It was worlds better than the 1500 it replaced, but less than my expectations. Make sure the basics are ok (lift pump output, no boost leaks). If the truck checks out you'll soon see why most here have modified these trucks. It took me an Ebay used EZ Edge $125, used set of RV 275's from a member here $200, $400 for gauges, $1400 for parts to rebuild/upgrade my spare trans. Pulls the box like a dream now.

Wind can be a huge drag on your truck.

I was driving through southern Utah recently with my camper on the back. On the flat road without wind the Edge Attitude was showing 30% load, with a strong headwind it would show 80% load.

The cruise was on 70 and before the wind kicked up the gasser's were passing me doing 75-80. When the wind started I caught right up to them

What J Body said..........

When mine was fairly new, it pulled my 7K, or so , TT OK on flat, open roads with no wind conditions. On long grades, one was Kansas to Colorado, it would pull down to 50 mph max. After adding the EZ and the 275's, you can feel the load, but it does not effect it near as much. EZ + Rv275's + gages makes it a whole different truck.

I underestimated the wind it was 40-50 sustained and ther were some pretty good hills. in OD the boost guage would hit 15, in 4th I saw 19.both ways the wind was coming from the front and side. I have 3.55 gears. I'm guessing the whole rig weighed 10k but thats a conservative est. I do have my stage 2 tips but I havent ordered my boost fooler from Haisley yet. I'll get the injectors put in ASAP. I could get up to speed no problem, felt like the trailer wasn't there. I think the trailer was bigger than the one in the pic that J BODY posted. but I was happy with 9.8 mpg with those conditions. the map sensor works fine cause you can feel and see it defuel. My truck has a new vp44 & LP I also put a big line kit on it at WOT I dont see less than 7psi fuel pressure, I changed th fuel filter a month ago or so. You guys are gonna have to remind me what the IAT sensor stands for I'm guessing its an air temp sensor. Thanks for the suggestions I'll see what I can do with them.

Yep intake air temp sensor. They get dity with soot and start to give false readings to the ecm which aids in fueling. Clean it with electrical contact cleaner or better yet replace it. It will run 40 dollars from Cummins, not the dealer. I do not know your mialage but being a first gen vp44 truck, you have to have a few clicks on it.

Thats not good, my truck is losing the injector pump and it can definitaly be noticed but it will still pull better than that, although i have never pulled anything that heavy in that high of winds
