Difference in turbos ?

Hey ya'll. What is the difference between the HX-35 and the HY-35 turbo charger? I know the HX is for the manual tranny and the HY is for the auto tranny. But what is the difference between the two?

Re:Difference in turbos ?

The HX turbo has a 12cm exhaust housing that can be upgraded to a lager size if needed. The HY has a 9cm housing that isn't upgradeable. The HY also has a hardline wastegate so you can't use a boost elbo on it.

Re:Difference in turbos ?

MLR1 is right on. HY is a good turbo, spools quick. Ifn you ever do any mods tho, like an EZ (which acts like a boost fooler also), then notice MLR's signature. He is running a turbomaster to increase boost from a max 19psi up to??????????. This is a good device or you could also use a J-Hook. More boost is good, up to a certain point, for lowering EGT's. HY runs good at about 24-25psi of boost.

Would I get more performance out of my Cummins if I switched to a HX? I like the idea of a bigger turbo.

Jrs...more performance? Probably not. You would probably see slightly lower temps, and slightly slower spool of your turbo.

If you increase the size of your turbo, and you want the spoolup to be about the same, you would need to increase the fueling a bit.

Re:Difference in turbos ?

Yes you would gain in a couple of ways if you switched. But if you switch, you would want to go to a modified HX, like maybe a PDR. PDR uses a larger pinwheel on the compressor side so you get more ommmph but still spools up good. Also allows you to use a 14cm wastegated housing as previously mentioned which will help EGT's alot. With lots of individuals going to twins, keep your eyes open in the classifieds for a low mileage PDRHX35.

99 Auto's have the HX-35 12cm compressor housing and 12cm turbine housing.

Re:Difference in turbos ?

POURIN DIESEL, THANKS. DOES THAT MEAN I CAN GO UP TO THE 14 OR 16 CM HOUSING? IF I CAN , WHAT AM I LOOKING AT IN COSTS, & IS IT WORTH IT? I WILL BE STACKING A BLUECHIP BOX ON TOP OF MY RAPTOR VERY SOON.

Re:Difference in turbos ?

CAPTDASH, yes you can upgrade the housing. You can get gated & non gated in the 14cm. I think the 16cm is only non gated but not shure. You may want to upgrade the turbo rather than change the housing. I can't keep up with the egt with the HX35 14cm combo. If you do change the housing you will see a small increase in lag on the bottom, and higher flow on the top with lower wot egt.

Hope this helps!

MLRI, WHAT DO YOU MEAN WHEN YOU SAY YOU CAN'T KEEP UP WITH THE HX35-14CM? IS WHAT YOU HAVE A HYBRID TURBO, OR IS THAT SOMETHING ELSE?

Re:Difference in turbos ?

At wot the egt can reach 1400 plus (i wont hold it there for more than a second or 2) with the box on the highest seting. I need to either get a HX35/40 hybrid or go to the HX40. I have a HX35 with a 14cm exhaust housing and it just won't flow enough air. I am shure the elevation has a major role in my egt problem. If i would have waited for the hybrid (HX35/40) i think i could controll my egt better for almost the same cost.

Re:Difference in turbos ?

Yes, MLR1, elevation could have something to do with it. What elevation are you at? I would say tho that unless running really heavy fueling (and no offense) but 275's are not heavy fueling a modified HX3514W such as PDR or Dodgezilla should be plenty for your needs. I only hit 1600 if I am on it to long. I mean after all, 4 or 5 seconds on the drag strip is nothing and if you are doing it towing then you are in the wrong gear regardless of the fact whether you have an automatic or stick. Don't forget, you need a 4" exhaust and you should have a cold air intake. I recommend Scotty 2. HTH

Re:Difference in turbos ?

I am running at 5200 + feet, i have a 4" turbo 2 tail exhaust, & AFE megacannon intake. Also the Edge box i am running is the predecesor to the edge comp, however it only does fuel no timing & does hook to the pump wire. I always downshift or back off when the temp gets above 1250 towing. It would just be nice to stay on the fuel on those long hills (or giving someone a run) ;D
