Dead VP with Overboost Code?

Hey Guys this is my first post but I've been doing ALOT of reading on this forum. I just bought a 2002 Cummins QC LB 4x4 and my Injection pump has already started giving me trouble . However I'm kind of confused because I'm getting the IP Code but also the Overboost code? I didn't think those two went hand in hand. I'm debating on having Antrim Diesel (Greencastle, PA) do the pump replacement but I'd like to figure this code out before taking it to Antrim. I just replaced the lift pump also if that makes a difference.

What symptoms does the truck exhibit? The IP may or may not be bad.... What codes are showing?

I have the same truck and on a trip down south in August (102 degrees outside and towing 8,500 lbs.) I got the dead pedal a couple of times. One time was with the cruise control on. The cruise tried to compensate for the dead pedal by flooring the throttle to maintain speed. The engine sounded like it was going to grenade itself for a couple of seconds until I could turn the cruise off. The dead pedal threw the pump code and the engine RPM from the cruise caused the overboost code.

Hope this helps.

Check and see if your waste gate moves. If it is stuck it will overboost and give the code. I had the same trouble with mine when I bought it. The waste gate was stuck, the dealer replaced the turbo under warranty. Then the VP44 failed and they did that under warranty too.

I have the overboost code too, how do I check the wastegate. I have a turbo whine/whistle, is that any indication of a bad turbo? It does have a boost gauge on it and it seems very responsive with no extreme numbers or anything. Also, I have found some evidence that I think the previous owner had a box on it at one time, if so could that have caused the boost code?

Turbo whine is normal. Yes box could have thrown over boost code.

If the box included a boost elbow the wastegate won't operate on stock levels and since the box is absent the ECM will not be fooled into not seeing the overboost. (Same goes for a J-hook that could be installed)

The IP code should not be caused by the overboost condition, but if it's a communication code it could come from some error while removing the box. (left off plugs etc)
I'd look into all the connectors to verify that they are seated properly before throwing parts at it.

Hey Guys Sorry it took so long. Symptoms.. Dead pedal, 25-50 idle rpm change when cold & less power towing then my old 318 1500 Ram . The Truck previously had a box on it and was removed prior to me purchasing the truck. Sadly I don't have a warrantly on the truck becuase I bought it used. I plan on replacing the VP unless I can find something else that would be causing all this. Also, I thought about putting a PowerPuck on it but I'm not sure how that would affect the dying VP because it needs to last until I can stretch the funds to get a new pump. Any Input?

Oh yeah and I'm new to diesels (Very Experienced in Gas) so where exactly is the Wastegate?

How many miles are on the truck? I am the second owner of a 2002 as well and the factory 7 yr./70,000 mile power train warranty follows the truck, not the owner.

The wastegate is at the turbo- there is an elbow on the compressor housing with either a hard line or a rubber line to the wastegate actuator (looks like a robot's lollipop)- Some folks block the wastegate and others install an elbow with a hole in it. If boost goes over the max that's programmed into the ECM it will defuel (virtually lift your foot)

What were the numbers of the codes? Reason I ask is there are several different codes that can point towards the IP or other problems.... The APPS can cause a dead pedal, a 0216 can be caused due to low LP pressure as well as a bad IP.

As mentioned an over boost code 0234 could be caused by the previous owner having installed a wastegate blocking device. Your truck should have an HY-9 turbo so they would have probably used a turnbuckle attached on the bottom of the turbo from the wastegate actuator and the exhaust housing. Another possibility is the wastgate is actually frozen in the closed position.

Hey Guys, 114,000 on the truck. The Codes are overboost and 0216. I'll check out the wastegate and I'm getting the money tuesday for the IP. Hopefully this fixes the issues I'm having now.
