DDRP pre filter

I'm going to replace my Carter LP on my 2002 which has been in for years simply because it has low pressure around 1-3 PSI at WOT and 9 -10 under normal cruise.

Just curious has anyone had any experience running a DDRP without adding the little automotive fuel filter? Sure I know the DDRP is a gerotor pump and not very good with solids probably similar to the factory carter which didn’t run a pre-filter. Seems to me this little filter while offering some protection would basically become a pre-filter for the much larger cartridge filter.

As long as you replace it every time you replace the cartridge filter. Small pre-filter will plug up much faster then the factory filter. Make sure you install with arrow facing fuel flow direction or toward engine.

IMO they will not plug up faster than the factory. they are rating like 120micron or 180 micron. I change mine every 2 oem fuel filters. so this is about 1 time a year. You can take them off and back flush with fuel or even tap them lightly and you will see some stuff come out. usually its pieces big enough to see since its only catching bigger micron items. I get mine from napa or local cummins.

IMHO, do not run the DDRP without the additional filter. I did that, being lazy, and the DDRP cratered after 4 months. I don't know if it got a chunk of something in there and locked up or what. I do know that the lift pump motor got so hot it stunk up the whole shop with the odor of burning electrical. I replaced the ddrp and added the filter. However, I am looking for another option, with a spin on filter, instead of the supplied one, because i bet that plastic fuel line won't last long with repeated filter changes.

I have the small metal NAPA pre filter on my set up to protect the FASS pump. The advantage of the plastic one is you can see when it's dirty. For 15 bucks or so, I just replace it with each fuel filter change, about 10K miles.

If ok to chime in.... I run and suggest a Raycor Filter assembly. I have the Raycor 4120 unit which has 3/4"-16 SAE ports and will accept the R45-R60-R90-R120 water seperation filters (2 micron - 30 micron) and have a yellow tinted (see-through) drain bowl at the bottom. It also has a primer port and pump at the top to help get rid of air when changing filters... Pretty cool and helpful.

I run the R90 & R120 filters and they last a long time but are a little expensive and hard to find. I cross-referenced the filter and found that the Baldwin BF-1283 will work (Center Threads 1"-14 SAE) which can be found at most truck stops. The max. flow rate is 120 GPH and you can also add a heater to the drain bowl!

The Raycor base & filter assembly can be a little expensive at a dealer which is why I purchased mine (NEW) on eBay for a fraction of what they would cost at a dealer.

Hope this helps !

Thumbs up My Fix

I also used the small Napa filters, The silver metal ones and the see through red wix fuel strainer,Which was nice it has a metal screen no paper filter in it, BUT what happen to me with the silver ones was after about 700 - 1000 miles with the silver metal filters my fuel pressure would drop to almost 0 from 20lbs when I applied any throttle, so I would change that little filter and my fuel pressure would come back and all was fine, One day I took one of the silver filters and cut it open to see just how clogged it was, What I found was it was not clogged at all BUT it was collapsing the paper filter. Those little filters are usually put on the pressure side of a fuel pump so the pressure keeps the filter blown up like a balloon, When you put them on the suction side of the pump in the direction of the arrow of the filter they would collapse, The wix fuel strainer solved that, But they are like $11.00 - $13.00 and the largest diameter was 5/16, That would be the red filter in the picture. SO I bought this New fleetgaurd filter head CHEAP on eBay $18.99 WITH a Filter, that screw's on. My local Diesel shop has Donaldson filters on sale Buy one get one free, So I get 2 of these for $10.50, So I made a bracket to mount it to the frame about the same height as the feed from the tank. ALL is working great now. makes it much easier to change pre filter now.
Just my 2 cents worth ,, haha If worth that much.

They also make different Micron filters for this head, also filter with drains on them.

Interesting....

How about turning around the napa filter? Wouldn't going backwards puff out the paper element?

Exactly!! run it backwards. What I did instead was use the wix or Napa 3971,It has a screen in it and it's see through, That's the red filter in my pic in my last post, Then I bought this filter head in my last post. And I don't have to crawl under the truck and undo hose clamps, let the fuel drain, install new filter, tighten clamps,,,ETC.. Now, unscrew the filter install the new one and I'm done in 30 second's.

This is interesting. I have always used the FleetG or Napa Metal/Silver Filters 3/8 since 2005. I have never had one collapse or ballon that I know of. My FP readings have never showed anything alarming so I have just been changing them out 1x year. Do they make them with paper and or metal screen only. I cut one open years ago and cannot remember what brand it was and it did not have paper in it? Long ago Vulcan performance sold a billet reusable mesh filter for just this reason that you took apart cleaned and put back together. I never bought one and when i went to buy one they stopped selling them? are they now only paper inside with small metal screen? both Napa and FleetG?

Fass, Air Dog etc They are still recommending to use this (metal) style with the pumps correct?

good pictures and nice set up with what you came up with to fix your issue.
