Dana60 White Gear Lube???

Finally getting around to replacing the gear lube both pumpkins... Popped the front cover and got quite a surprise... gear lube was white... like milk white. Really caught me by surprise to say the least... you can imagine the first few thoughts that crossed my mind. But it's the right consistancy, no bubbles and no metal. The 80 on the rear has always been filled with the normal brown colored lube.

Assuming this is normal, is there any reason why DC would use a white lube in the Dana60's, aside from trying to score a few heart attacks???

As soon as they are done dripping out, both front and rear are being refilled with Amsoil 75-90 (series 2000).

It looks like you got some water contamination in the lube. Change that stuff out! It's not supposed to look that way.

I agree. Water will make it milky.

do you do alot of 4wheeling? if so you should probably change the fluid in your diffs after each water crossing. the fluid in my jeep always resembles chocolate milk becaue of this .

Its changed out now.... Now to sort out where the water could have come from. If were to add up all the time I've used 4x4 the total time would be less than 15 minutes TOTAL over her 72K, and i got her with <40 miles on the clock. No obvious signs of rust or anything on the ring/pinion or in the pumpkin. The only thing that comes to mind would be the vent hose (think that is what it is for), I found it hanging loose a couple weeks ago pretty close to the ground, the little clip came loose that held it to the frame. I'll check on the new lube in a couple days and keep my eye on it from there.

Other than that I'd welcome any other suggestions.

The vent hose is connected at the axle disconnect and goes up into the engine compartment right by the air box. That should be a pretty safe place for it. No idea where your water came from. Hopefully a one time occurence.
