Cummins "sneeze" on shut-off
Cummins "sneeze" on shut-off
I have had my '01 Dodge Cummins for a couple of months now and love it. One thing that bothers me is that when I shut it off, there is a noise at the end that I can best describe as a sneezing sound. Is this normal or an indication of some sort of problem? Thanks to all for a great forum.
Re:Cummins "sneeze" on shut-off
First time I've heard it called a sneeze. Huff, puff, cough, but not a sneeze. Not sure what you are talking about. If it is what is usually referred to as a "chirp" it is your serpentine belt. The cummins stops so quickly at shut down that the belt, alternater, etc. "slips" a fraction of an inch causing the "chirp".
If it is the "cough" or "huff" it is caused by the air conditioner. Nothing harmful at all. It's merely the built-up pressure from the high-side refrigerant bleeding down as it normally does in regular operation - you just don't normally hear it because of other vehicle noises. Only reason you might NOT hear it at times when shutting down, is because the A/C compressor is at a point in its cycle where the pressure has nearly bled down to its low PSI, and the compressor hasn't yet restarted. (Taken from a reply by to an earlier thread...don't remember who...Gary - KJ6Q?)
If perchance you hear it and the A/C is shut off let us know.

Well, it does sort of sound like pressure being released...but to the best of my memory I think I have heard it every time I have shut the truck off, whether the A/C was running or not. Either way it looks like nothing to worry about. I'll check out the A/C thing and see if I can figure it out...at this point I am leaning towards the serpentine belt theory. Thanks for the quick response.

My truck has been doing the same thing since I got it and I have never had any problems. I have heard other Cummins do it too, I think it is normal and nothing to worry about.<br>

All combos, defrost, and of course AC settings run the AC compressor. Somtimes with the air condition off, my truck will not chirp. When it stoped chirping with the air on. I bought a new belt so it would chirp. I love that noise. It makes the other truck owners look at you real funny like something just broke. I just smile and know. 8)

Stamey- If it realy anoys you just unplug the electric clutch on the ac compreser during the winter. I cant remember off the top of my head but most just have a simple 2 wire conector rite on the clutch. The only downside would be that your windsheild would not defog as easaly if it fogged up on the inside.

bkrukow,
Perhaps I should have phrased it "used to annoy me". Now, for the reasons, 1. it is good to run the AC all year round to keep the system in good working order, 2. I don't notice any difference in fuel mileage, and 3. the reason you stated, the necessity of it sometimes to defog the windshield, it no longer annoys me as much.
